NEW TO THIS! BEEN TAKING THE TEMPRETURE ALL WEEK AND IT HAS BEEN JUST UNDER THE HUNDRED TONIGHT IT IS 98 HOW LONG WOULD IT BE BEFORE SHE STARTS?
SHE ISNT NESTING OR ANYTHING STILL WANTS TO PLAY BALL, HER BREATHING IS A LITTLE HEAVIER THAN NORMAL BUT NOT PANTING.
ANY ADVICE GREATLY RECIEVED AS THE VET SCANNED HER THERE IS ONLY ONE PUPPY BUT HE SAID THERE MIGHT BE A CHANCE OF ANOTHER BEHIND THAT ONE, AND HAS ADVISED SHE MIGHT NEED A C SECTION IF THE PUPPY IS TWO BIG.
sorry left caps on, all i can think about is my little girl and this pup!

Hi, try not to worry - it could still be a couple of days yet I'm afraid. Good luck when the time comes :)
thanks for replying, what are the signs i should look for next?
Hi Shebeen, How many days is she from first mating? how long ago did you have her scaned? I saw 4 pups on my girls scan, she went on to have 10. Her temperature dropped 48 hours before she whelped, she was panting heavy and digging her bed for about 10 hours before first pup was born.

hi golden girl, by my reckoning day 60 but it was an accidental mating whilst walking with my friends dog he didnt manage to mate her properly and i thought she was having a phantom pregnancy, then she was stung by a wasp and an allergic reaction so took her to the vets told them about the phantom and they said they could feel a pup or a forgein body (at the time she was vomiting from allergic reaction ) had her scanned a week last friday day 51 and there was 1 heart beat the vet thought she would go to day 58 as he said the pup was quite big, the sire is only just over 12 months old and we always go for a walk together once a week and he only must have caught her for a second, this is also why the vet reckons she might only have 1 maybe 2 pups, her tempreture has been under 100 since her scan 10 days ago but tonight it has dropped to 98, there is alot of movement from pup or pups very active i dont know how she manages to sleep. she is a jack russell and is only tiny her self, have got a whelping box ready etc although my lakeland dog keeps getting in and making himself comfy she has not been anywhere ner it.
Good luck with your girl but one thing, why on earth where you walking your in season bitch with a dog!!!

Hi Shebeen, what sort is your friends dog? If it's a big breed you could have problems? 12 months is old enough in most breeds to sire a litter, and no indication of how many pups you will have. I've only actually whelped one litter - well not me you understand my bitch :) but I am quite experienced when it comes to stud dogs having owned two popular studs and also had collections done to be sent all over the world. Young dogs on average tend to produce larger litters but as you've had a scan and had your bitch examined this obviously isn't the case. Good luck anyway, too late for regrets now - I'm sure you won't let it happen again! Jane
hi jane, my friends dog is another jack russell he is smaller than her and has queen ann legs, and as soon as she has had this pup she is off to be spayed!!!
cant take it been up all night worried waiting for a sign she has been quite restless, fingers crossed!

Hi Shebeen
Try not to stress yourself out too much as your dog may pick up on this. Her temperature could go up again yet & equally it could drop further than 98 :-) Have you checked it this morning? You say you have a whelping box ready ~ please keep your other dog away from both the box & where you want your girl to sleep & have her puppies. Make it a nice place for her, her very own place where she can get some peace & quiet. Put her some newspapers in so if she wants a dig she can do.
As you will learn from reading on here, every dog is different when it comes to whelping :-) When my Emma had her first litter she had me up every night for a week & then went 4 days over & all the while her temp was up & down like a yo-yo!! While Emma was preparing herself I wasn't allowed to sleep ~ lol!! Emma had 2 big puppies, the first I did have to help with as she was a tucked breach & the Vet was an hour away. My Daisy on the otherhand was very different! Wouldn't have anything to do with her whelping box until 24 hours before. Her temp dropped the day before, she slept solid all day, all night (shame the same can't be said for me ~ lol!) in her whelping box, got up the next morning, went to the loo, had some breakfast, cried to go upstairs, took her up, into her box she went, 10 mins of digging & out popped the first puppy!! All over & done with in 2 hours :-) (Daisy had 6 puppies & hers were 5 days early)
I'm sure your girl will be fine :-) Please keep us posted with how things go & try to get some rest & sleep while you can :-)
hi borderpride,
thanks for the advice, my other dog is off to watch telly at my mums, still waiting thought she was near this afternoon, but still playing ball, heres to another sleepless night!
will keep you posted, need all the help i can get!
day 61 well i am shocked! my little lilly had 3 puppies 2 girls and a boy had a bit of a bad time from about 6.30pm last night and first puppy was rather big and arrived tail first at 5.05am second the smallest arrived head first at 5.45am and third tail first at 6am again rather large, they look like little jigsaw puzzles. what amazed me was the vet had said that green stuff would come first and then the pup should be delivered within the hour, there was nothing she was trying to push for about 3 hours not continuos but was very tired and then a little bit of water and then the puppie was there at one point i thought it was going back in(to my horror) at least she didn't need a c section like the vet thought and it just goes to show scanned on day 51 and only one heart beat although he did say there was a possibility there was two!
oh and the whelping box didnt work for me she had the first in my bed washing machine on as i write, (where she felt more comfortable!) but happy enough to have the others and stay there now, and as she is only 2years old herself a wonderfull mum!
thank you all for your help and support - and no more pups for us accidental or not she will be off to be spayed asap.

Congratulations, glad it went well!! :D

Hi and congratulations,
The scans are useless they never get the puppy numbers right, my vet said my girl was expecting 3 and out popped 7. Unless you think there is a problem, I would not bother to pay out for a scan again. First time bitches do not seem to go into the whelping box to start with, my girls first pup, she ran in the kitchen and plopped him right on my foot and then ran off again, the second one she dropped in the conservatory and again ran off, I had to do the cord and sack for those two, by the 3rd she settled into the whelping box and delivered and took care of all the other new born pups. I guess they do not have a clue what is going on themselves. But learn as they go along.
Anyhow, just watch out that the new mum does not sit on her pups, they love to do that!
And good luck!
thank you!
well been to the vet today, vet very pleased with mum and pups he couldnt believe how big they were for 2 days old, she is doing them proud, i'm amazed how well she is doing
she is so carefull, first time today she came out for a play with her ball keeping an eye on her babies, and even played with my other dog which made him very happy as i think he felt a bit pushed out by her, he has been very good stayed away from where the pups are and mum but then i think he values his life!
Hi Lyssa, Thank you, i only had her scanned as she was quite poorly (stung by a wasp and had an allergic reaction ) and thought she was having a phantom at the time! and it only cost me £10 so not so bad, we had to do the sack and help with the cord as all she wanted to do was clean herself, i did notice she wasn't as nervous once the first came out, i should have bought her a book! (i should have bought myself a book!!! lol
i have to say the biggest is a boy and also makes all the noise, she knows when he wants her attention! they are such little characters even this young looking forward to them opening there eyes and running about!
