Topic Dog Boards / Health / Molly been on the booze!

We have those blue bin things for empty bottles, it was emptied today and I brought it back and put it in its usual place (behind the garden shed).  Few minutes later I notice Molly with her head in it licking away at the wet patch on the bottom, tail wagging, and I don't know if it's my imagination but she's been decidedly giddy since!  She's all waggy and silly and keeps shoving her head at me for fuss, now, she's normally a friendly happy dog but she just seems a bit more so!  Seriously though, I know dogs can't break down alcohol and she can only have had what little bit was spilt on the bottom of the bin, but its not likely to do her any harm is it?

I'm not sure whether such a small amount would do harm or not, maybe someone else will know.
Might i suggest something re the bottle recycling thou :)
I rinse all my bottles and cans out before putting them in their respective bags/boxes. stops all those stale alcohol smells and dribbles, and i dont get bothered with wasps in summer either. :)

Hope she's ok and doesnt wake up with a hangover :D

Thanks, we have a weird system for recyling here, the cans go into a green dustbin, and yes, I do rinse those out, will definitely do it with the bottles in future!
Pleased to hear there shouldn't be any ill effects, cheeky madam, we'll see what she's like on the fields at tea-time, that should blow the cobwebs off!

since i posted my reply i have been having a google, just to find out if there is anything out there on dogs and alcohol as i wasn't sure either. i found 2 items, one from a doggy owner and the other from a online magazines dog editor.

doggy owner
dog editor

After reading those I now think it pays to be a bit cautious where alcohol is concerned.
Hope everything is fine with her :)

Thanks for you e-mail Jane, I've read the links and it sounds as if alcohol is definitely not a good idea for most dogs. Molly just seems a bit tired now so I think we've got away without any nasty effects thank goodness.

I dont think a small amount does any harm, infact the pub that me and the husband frequent a gent comes in with his St Bernard who gets half a pint of bitter down him, the dog is around 6/7 years old now and looks good, infact he has a beautiful coat which his owner puts down to the bitter.

None at all! I presently have 3 generations and have had 5 generations in total of complete boozehounds who steal the stuff out of glasses and have even been given their own tipple on very special occassions. They've all done very well on it. :)

ours love abit of alcohol now and again.  I'm sure that like with most stuff if it's only a little it won't do any harm!

I have a tiny ferret jill that absolutely adores red wine.
She's only allowed a little lap tho'.

I wouldn't worry, our eldest love's Guinness and used to have a small saucer once a week but since the OH gave it up due to a beer gut she no longer gets. One Christmas she managed to sup about half pint of beer and was decidely tipsy and I am sure she had a hang over in the morning :-) :-) All like a drop of champagne and some are partial to a dry white wine!!

My shar-pei like a bit of red wine or whisky and coke - they only get a lick of it off my mum's fingers though when she comes round for a meal. She's quite discerning though (shar-pei I mean, my mum would drink drain cleaner if it contained alcohol!) and I remember when her daughter was still alive, they were both disgusted when my mum got vodka instead of whisky - neither would touch it!

My TM puppy isn't interested.

Glazby my boxer is partial to a little baileys (I put my finger in my glass and let him lick it off so its only a small amount).  He also likes white wine, vodka and coke (was spilled on the floor and he was there lapping it up before I could even grab a cloth)!!
:-)

Molly none the worse for wear thank goodness!  Her and Max both like ice cubes - straight from the freezer not once they've been in the drink so when I'm having a tipple they seem satisfied with that. Bless them, aren't dogs just wonderful.
