Just when we thought everyhting was going so well, my little fella pulled through his tough time and is doing so well, we found our other male pup dead this evening :( :( :( i tried to revive him but it was too late, i had only gone for a bath :( :( :( had the vet take a look and he cant see any reason why it happened there was no infection, he was well fed, he said sadly its just one of those things, :( he checked the rest of the litter over and they are all fine we just cant understand why a perfectly healthy 8 day old pup just died the way he did, im devastated :( how cruel can nature be ? :( i keep trying to think what i have done wrong, ive made sure they are kept warm, i make sure they are feeding regularly that no-one is being left out, ensure that mum is being fed well and taken care of, ive hardly slept for the best part of the week with making sure the little guy was ok, i just cant get my head around it :(
I am so sorry to hear of your sad loss, its heart breaking to lose them so young xxxxx
Is it possible that the mum has maybe laid on the puppy? My girl did that last time she had a litter, mine were 2 weeks old, we managed to revive our puppy but only because we were in the room at the time.
Thinking of you
that was my first thought bears-mum but ive been watching her and she actually moves the pups before laying down so that she wont lay on them, saying that anything is possible :( i was out of the room about an hour having a bath before my OH came home from work, i wish i hadnt bothered now:( , it just goes to show just when you think its safe :(

Oh really sorry to hear, such a shame :( Don't blame yourself, if you needed to leave them then you shouldn't feel guilty.

Sorry about your loss, but I don't leave mine unattended (apart from a quick run to the loo and to make another sandwich and a coffee) until their eyes are openat about 14 days. :( Even the most careful bitch can make a mistake and I won't risk it.

Oh Chris, big {{{{{hugs}}}}} to you. I know exactly how you must be feeling right now, I lost a little boy and a girl at 3days old a few days ago. It is heartbreaking.
Is it possible that mum may have inadvertently suffocated him? I had a very lazy and clumsy bitch years ago (wonderful mum, just dozy) who fell into a sound sleep on top of her pup and suffocated him, the following day I had to literally pull her off another, she just wouldnt move.
sometimes life can be such a bitch :(
My thoughts are with you
Such a shame. Don't blame yourself, i truely believe things happen for a reason, and as painful as it is, if he was meant to be an angel, then he would have been taken anyway. The pain does ease with time, and especially with all the other puppies there needing you and your care. He'll always have a special place in your heart :-)
Love and hugs xxxxxxx

So sorry to read your sad news Chris :-( Sending you {{{{hugs}}}} Please don't blame yourself.

So sorry to hear about your baby boy.My first litter I lost my girl puppy when she was 5 days old.I expected it but you just hope and pray against all odds that you can save them.It still eats me away,I did like you, gave it my all but it wasnt to be.You will never know for sure why its happened and its an awful time for you.Its a very intense time rearing babies, and take comfort in your other babies,it wasnt your fault.
RIP little one, i am so sorry to here about your loss, fingers crossed for the rest.
sorry about your pup, nature is cruel. maybe there was something wrong with him you couldnt see or of detected till he was older.
finger crossed the others will be ok.
sarah x
thanks ever so much for all your kind words and wishes :)
it still hasnt really sunk in yet, as i said to a point, as hard as it would have been i think i would have understood it more had it been the little boy who had the difficult start, i guess you are right when they say these things happen for a reason :( We have buried him under our apple tree, he will forever be remembered, he may have only been just over 1 week old but these little mites dont half grab hold of your heart quickly dont they :(
I'm so sorry to hear your sad news :-( Sometimes nature can be very cruel :-(
I didn't leave my girl unattended because although she was a wonderful Mum she did have a habit on lying on them and I had to frequently rescue puppies from underneath her. At the end of the day you can't stay awake for 24hrs a day or not go to the toilet etc so you can't blame yourself. Focus on the postive aspect ie, the little boy you saved :-)

Hi,
So sorry to hear of your loss, I have been lucky not to loose any to date (fingers, toes and legs crossed) the most probable reason is that the mum did accidently suffocate or sit on him. As much as the mum probably moved the litter around, they can be quite clumsy too, and I have very often had to rescue a pup squashed under the mum, If you are not in earshot to hear a pup in this positions tiny squeal, there is nothing you could have done, do not blame yourself, you can not be with the litter 24/7. If you have another litter, never trust the mum not to do this, it is quite common and unfortunately in the lap of the Gods! So try to always be in earshot for the first 2 weeks. I will never understand why the mum does not get up when she can hear her pup squealing beneath her, but this is what they do. (Or don't do!)
I can understand how devastated you must feel, but please don't blame yourself.

Sorry to hear of your loss, hope the rest are doing fine.
thanks again everyone :) the rest of the pups are doing great and are getting bigger by the day :D it seems that mum did lay on the little boy that died as we have had to rescue a few from under her over the last few days :( but now they are getting bigger its not so easy for her to do especially as they are alot more vocal now :D

Sadly this does hapen and even pig rails won't prevent it on occasion. One of my bitche4s had a very long drawn out whelping and she and I were exhausted after two nights without sleep. I was woken by my dauhter at 6am as she could only count five of the 6 live born pups (two were stillborn), and we found the strongest boy pup flat as a pancake under her. It was even worse as a weak pup then had to be put to sleep at 11 days, so in some ways we wished it had been that one that had gotten crushed. :D
The same bitch ahd 3 years earlier had a litter of 9 and was as careful as could be and never laid on a single one.
