Hi can anyone tell me if it is ok to bath 3 week old puppies? They are absolutely covered from nose to tail in puppy porridge.
Would it be ok to just wash them over with warm water if the room is lovely and warm? Any advice would be great.
Thanks

I have never bathed pups that young but use a flannel with baby bath liquid (I use Lidl one with Camomile) in a bowl of water and use that to clean them up as it doesn't need rinsing.

I also use this to clean the bitch after whelping and to keep her fresh and comfy.

Thanks Brainless will do that now.

Having baby wipes handy is a good idea too - takes off the "gunge" immediately after eating before it dries in and they don't get too wet.

Be careful about wet wipes, I used them on a previous litter and they got upset tummys.Gail :) :) :)

Won't the bitch clean them up after their meal? Also if you feed each puppy separately, one at a time from individual dishes, they won't get covered in food in the first place. It's also good training and stops them developing a tendency to food guard.

I'm with you on this one Jeangenie. Our litter is being weaned on puppy porridge and they get in a real mess if not watched, but Mum is there licking every morsel off till their coats shine :-) :-)

I do find though that they get it under their chins and in the neck are and Mum can miss this and it then dries like concrete.  Within a few days though they have got better with their eating and they don't so messy and Mum can keep them tidy. :D

Yes. I bathed them much younger than that after checking with the vet. That litter was born by CS and the dam rejected them so they were covered with sticky birth fluid and meconium. I bathed them in warm water with a tiny amount of baby shampoo, rubbed them off and let them dry in a toasty warm room.

Hi , personaly i wouldnt risk them so young in a bath with water just incase an accident occurs.

Its best to clean them one by one, useing baby wipes or any give of wipes but baby wipes leaves a nice babyish smell afterwards

:D

Mum is cleaning up but with 9 puppies there's only so much she can do.As for feeding them individually I have been doing this but they still get in a right mess.I took advice from Brainless and wiped them all over with a cloth dipped in water with a touch of baby bath added and they are all now lovely and clean and smelling gorgeous. Thanks for your advice!

It is also useful to wipe their feet with when people come to see them and pick them up once they are going outside as their feet can get piddly smelling :D  What is the first thing a pup does when picked up, plonks it's feet on peoples faces :D  Also if rthe little darlings roll or walk through their poo.
