Your pup howls because she is lonely and afraid and has probably never been on her own in her life before.

You need to teach her that it's ok to be on her own.

When she howls do NOT return to her or open the crate, because then you're just rewarding the howling - the dog gets her own way and can come out!  If she howls you must just ignore her and wait for a few seconds silence.  If you want to, when you get that silence, then you can let her out.

Don't forget to make the crate a nice place for the pup by hiding treats in there every day.

If you want to 'learn the language of dog' then an excellent book I'd recommend is The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson - you can get it from Amazon.
