Ok guys this comes out of another thread and it made me curious to see if any of you are in a similar situation. My OH will not throw out clothes until they are TOTALLY beyone repair (and then wants to give them to a charity shop ) His oldest items that he still wears are a denim jacket and a pair of DMs from 1976. He remembers exactly as he spent his first money from a saturday job on them.

Now I dont really mind thrifty BUT I do sometimes feel that I live with a scarecrow!

I have a Biba dress that I bought in 1974 (still fits!). In a trunk in my mother's loft is my old Afghan coat (circa 1972) amongst other articles from the same era.

Our son has demanded the shirts my husband wore when we were dating in the late 70s (and which were bought several years earlier) and wears them when he's going somewhere smart - they're back in fashion again! :D

I have a leather jacket that was my mum's. She bought it when she lived in London in 1970 (six years before I was born!). Mum had an Afghan coat too but she said it stank like wet dog if she wore it in the rain so it was binned several years ago.

Lol, that's what I call my hubby :-D .... and  he also gets called Steptoe as he hates throwing anything away that'll "come in useful one day" Every autumn he has to clear his junk from the cowsheds to make room for the cows when they come in for winter.

Mmm clothes, he's got some pretty old gear but the oldest would be a couple of ancient overcoats that belonged to his Dad who died in 1980 and he was as bad so they were well past decent then :-(  At least he only wears them around the farm and not often, just in nasty weather.

He does buy new clothes but hates throwing the old stuff away so they wont fit in his drawers. I sometimes sneak tatty stuff straight in to the dustbin just before it's collected. ;-) :-D

LOL Kath that has cheared me up no end and given me a wonderful picture of you OH walking round the farm with an old overcoat tied round the middle with baler twine :D Thankfully we dont have any barns, although my OH is always very neat. I just know that we would end up filling them with every old car and bit of machinery he could get his hands on. Not to mention every waif and stray from the animal world. As it is he is wondering if it is OK to put bat boxes and an owl box on one modern village house. I did nave to point out that he would have some sleepless nights as the cats would be stood on the bed trying to get close to all those interesting noises.

:-D :-D  Handy stuff that baler twine ;-)

>would end up filling them with every old car and bit of machinery he could get his hands on

I bet your OH and mine would get on very well.   :-D  We've got bits of machinery all over the place, some he's hardly ever used   He says he'll have a farm sale when he retires but I keep telling him that rust doesn't fetch a good price and he'd make more money selling the extra grass that would grow if he got rid.   :-D

Yep Mine wants to buy a farm when he retires - sounds like yours would fit the bill :D A coat would not be complete without baler twine, it goes with the dump bags, training treats, large hanky, army knife, long lost whistle.......

Well my OH would get gold for Britain in the keeping/finding/hoarding rubbish stakes :D

As for old clothes ....I have had to HIDE a pair of shorts that he wore as a scout-leader, way back in 1959 (he was trendy & had quite short shorts then & a nice b*m and legs).   He can STILL get into them and would wear them every summer, but I'm afraid that they are getting too thin - they are the colour of NOTHING from all the washing they've had.   He hoicks them out every summer, I grab them & stash them away and the next summer - he's found the blasted things again!!!  He almost wore his (1963) black mohair wedding suit for work last week, when Asdas had a "wear 1960s' clothes day".   His 1970s suits were hijacked by Nos 2 & 3 sons for Bad Taste parties back in the 90s.

Me - I still wear a big, baggy sweater (man's) knitted for me by my mum back in the late 50s, when beatniks were the thing if you weren't a rockabilly!
