Advice needed on complete feed for large breed pup that doesn't cause wind. Our 5 month Utonagan is on Pro Plan at the moment and stinks. He was fed on raw chicken & Beta puppy when we got him & had wind then also. He will eat ANYTHING at all - think this is part of the problem. I've read a lot of good things about Burns & Nature feeds. Has anyone found either of these feeds helpful as far as gas is concerned. You don't hear him coming but boy do you smell him! Help! Our elderly dog is fed on a cheap complete feed & table scraps, is nearly 13yrs old, active, shiney coat & NO smelly gas. Took the vets advice with the pup but not happy!!

If you are happy with the Pro Plan other then the wind, try the lamb and Rice one. If you decide to change his food stay away from Chicken, it does sometimes cause wind in some dogs.

No matter what I feed Fagan he always has the most stinkiest wind !

Generally speaking wind is caused by the over production of bacteria in the gut.
For example, dogs are not equipped with the digestive enzymes to break down cereals/grains or milk, hence these components must be broken down in the intestines by bacteria. The over production of bacteria required to digest this will cause gas.
there are of course other ingredients that cause gas if the dog is intolerant of/allergic to an ingredient.
You can approach this problem in a number of ways:
treat the symptoms by giving charcoal biscuits, this will absorb a lot of gas
improve the metabolism by adding digestive enzymes to his meals and pro biotics, this will balance out the gut flora
Identify and remove the gas producing ingredients.
I heard recently that passing wind in humans is perfectly natural and to pass upto 20 times a day is normal anything more than that and you could have a problem, or so this Doctor on the telly was saying.
i wonder if its the same for dogs :)

So is the opposite abnormal and unnatural then?????????????

I would imagine so. Methane is a normal by-product of digestion, and it's got to get out somehow!

Oh dear, my poor dogs are unnatural and abnormal. ;(
:D :D :D

Perhaps they're just very polite and only do it when you're not around! ;)
or you could be one of the lucky few who's dogs do it very quietly and without the pong!! :D :D
