would anybody be interested if something like discover dogs or paws in the park was held further up the country, the reason i ask a few of us where talking at club the other night and we where saying, would the kc think of starting something like they have in london further up north so people who live in the north east, scotland etc would they be willing to help host the event, we would need agility, obedience, husky racing,htm,carting,whippet/afgan racing, events like that, hearing dogs, assistance dogs, anything doggie , events that people other than the ones that know about what we all do with our dogs, so people outside of what we do with our dogs could come and visit and see what is on offer, how many times have you spoken to people when just out walking and you get onto your subject be it breed, agility, obedience etc and the person you are talking to did not know these activities excisted let alone could do them with there dogs, do you think it would be a good idea to host an event like this, and if you do where would you like to see the event hosted.

We do have sled racing up here in scotland but not that many meetings thou. I would love to see more events further north. whether for fun or learning.
It seems that most events whether doggy related or not are held round edinburgh, which bugs me as there's another 5-6 hours driving til you reach the top of scotland, it doesnt all stop at edinburgh there is life beyond :D

Yes please! Not enough doggy things happen in Scotland, we'd love to see more going on here. :)

I agree.....i would love there to be more events up here too! :D :D
Sounds good to me and I'm stuck bang in the middle almost, but I'd be up for it!
would the borders of northumberland/scotland would that be ok, if we could find a park big enough to hold something.

I think you might be looking at Kelso. I think there is a show ground there and there is definitely the racecourse. Doesn't help people in the northern parts of Scotland though, which I would say would be from Perth to Wick (including the west as well). Bit of a drive from there to the Borders in one day.

too true copper_girl,
I have to make the hike from nr inverness down to nth yorks every year just to have a kid free week (kids go to grannys) 6-7 hr drive down and then back again the next day
I dont think we'd get many takers from us further north if it involved driving for 4-5hrs or more to get to the borders. I would do a 2-3 hr drive... so maybe somewhere near perth or sterling.
I think we'd have to consider whether there would be accomadation available for dogs aswell, as i for one would not be able to leave mine behind, not if i want a home when i get back :D

Near Perth sounds good to me too! My mum lives there, so we can all bunk at hers!!! :-) :D

Maybe you shoudl put the idea forward to the KC, maybe just starting off as a discoverdogs with breed booths and afew demonstrations of things like HTM etc etc and let it grow. :)

I think they should definitely do Discover Dogs several more times a year in different places. We have one in London, one in Birmingham with Crufts, so that's the south and Midlands covered. How about one around Manchester, one around Newcastle and one in Scotland. Can't suggest anywhere in Scotland but I'm sure our north of the border members can. All three need to be a place that is easy to get to by road and rail so us less fortunate people can use public transport and preferably an indoor venue so weather isn't an issue.

How about Glasgow SECC? They have loads of different size halls, is indoors (Scottish weather is very unpredictable! :D ) and has good rail / public transport and motorway links.

I think there should be one in Northern Ireland too. To our shame, we have a terrible record for cruelty and we contribute a huge percentage to the number of healthy dogs PTS every year, not to mention the puppy farming that goes on... :(

:( I definately feel that the public here could use an opportunity to learn a bit more about responsible dog ownership.
Yeah should be one up in Scotland as we can never get down to the london one as with two kids it is just too far.

There already is (or at least was in the past) a similar event held at the SECC. Can't for the life of me remember what time of year but we were invited to attend with our breed as exhibits - couldn't go as it happened so unfortunately not able to give any details. It was about 2 years ago from memory that we were contacted.
Perhaps either the SKC (if they were involved) or the SECC themselves could provide details of whether it's still running.
Regards, Teri :)

It could be something the Welsh and Scotish Kenenl Clubs could do, especailly useful to help combat puppy farming of which both areas are full.

Sounds like a great idea...but I wouldn't get carried away about it... IMHO the kennel club is never particularly interested in what it's members think!
