Topic Dog Boards / Health / B.C. puppy still alive!! ?'s snotty nose

I just got done talking to the University that discovered my puppys(Wicket) problems. He has been doing amazing recently. His lungs were x-rayed again and the vet was astonished at how much improvement his lungs had made. He said he never would of thought this puppy would look this great. Still not fluid free(as we know he never will be). His breathing is normal now and his appitite is ravenous. New development though over the weekend. He has a horrible snotty nose. Very thick yellow snot and tons of it!!! Still acts great though(chasing his brother around as I write). Vet says he has probably asperated a piece of food that is stuck in his nasal passage causing an infection that even the antibiotics can't get rid of. Told me the only thing they normally would do would be to put them under and go in there to wash the nasal cavity out real well. Seeing as this is a problem he will continue to do on and off she felt it was not worth risking putting him under. She said I could find ways to try and flush it out myself. Suggested a vaporizer, or saline nasal drops. Does anyone have any brilliant idea's? Don't want him to asperate fluids though seeing as his lungs are so much better.
I did try holding him kind of head down and let him drink some water which did produce a huge anount of snot as the water entered the passage way and came out his nose. Of course doing this very often I will also be taking the slight chance(upside down) of him asperating some in his lungs. Any idea's for this happy little pup would be greatly appreciated!!!

Just another thought. Would there be something safe I could have him smell or breath that would help him sneeze and possible dislodge anything? He does not sneeze on his own well. He will sit there with all this horrible snot running out his nose and act as if nothings in his nose. Not like a person who would be trying to get all that stuff out!!

Tickle his nose with a feather?? :D  let him sniff some pepper? - but just a little shake - it often makes me sneeze if someone puts pepper on their dinner ;)

Seriously, so glad this little chap is doing well :D   Hope you're able to fix this for him.   All I can say is - get creative, its worked for you so far :) :)

Thanks Dill I had wondered about the pepper I'll try that. Don't understand why he does'nt just sneeze for want of ridding that much goo. But He has had so many problems maybe he has become ablivious to his issues? Just happy to be alive!! Ya and you know what I still tell myself he won't live long but he is a miracle already to be alive and so happy at 4 months old now!!! I also had his titers taken at the University for several common diseases(Parvo, etc) and they came back extremely high, so they told me to now let him live a normal puppy life out and about for walks. I will still guard him from really public places such as dog parks(for fear of a weakened immune system) but walks around our immediate neighborhood and such he will greatly enjoy. He has changed my life for sure!!! To be sick and yet as happy as he is amazes me every day. If only we could be so easy to please.

Glad to hear your pup's still going strong. Just a thought - Whisky!!!
Not to give him to drink :D but I only have to dip a finger in whisky, stick it near my dog's nose and he starts sneezing  (wicked mummy, I know :D , but he gets his own back by snotting all over me

My dogs will sneeze if aerosols (like air freshener, fly killer or deodorant) is sprayed in the same room as them)Might be worth a try?

You could stick your mouth over his nose and suck... ewwwwww! Gross but it might work. You might want to have a spitoon and some mouthwash on standby afterwards. Or how about spraying perfume on a cloth and let him take a good whiff - perfume never fails to make either me or my dogs sneeze. We used to play a game with my first dog where shw would stand there while we rubbed the top of her muzzle towards her nose vigorously till she sneezed - she's always come back for more.

Glad he's doing well - good luck to both of you.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I know my other dogs sneeze if they are in the bathroom with me and I use hairspray, but he is with me every morning and has never sneezed. I even wondered before if his sense of smell was messed up also? Though he seems to pick up on food smells extremely quick and easy!!! Especially foods he loves!!!

HA!!

Phoebe has a point !!!  :D :D :D

How about an aspirator?  like they use for babies and newborn puppies??  you can buy them from the canine chemist, you may be able to get them in a local chemist but I wouldn't bet on it ;)   They were mentioned on a thread recently :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Got to be worth a try ???
