Hi there,

I've been asked if I would take a Dalmation.
I don't, at the minute, know his age. In fact whether it's a bitch or a dog.
He/she is only young and according to it's owners is getting too big and difficult to excercise.
The 'man of the house' is going on holiday for an extended term (at her majesty's pleasure).

I don't know the owners personally but I think the 'wife' just can't manage the dog until her partner comes home. The dog is a 'dear' so I've been told and very well behaved. I BET.

It's pointless getting in touch with breed rescue at this time as they want me to pick up the dog in 3 days and don't want anything to do with re-homing it.

Does anyone know if the local breed rescue would help out with this dog if he came to me first???

I have experience in rescue but no experience with this breed. I know they are a handful.

If the dog was as well behaved as I've been assured then I would 'probably' be able to find it a home but I would be very concerned that I may not be able to give the new 'owners' the best advice about the breed. More importantly if the dog had any behavioural issues I may not be able to address them correctly for the breed.

I would, of course, contact the breeder first as the dog has all it's papers with it.

Dawn, If it is a young male Dalmatian that has not had much in the way of training they can be a bit of a handful.

If you are serious about taking him in, then I would at least go and see him/her first, take him out and see how you get on.

If you want to contact Dalmatian rescue the following link will give the number http://www.lancedal.demon.co.uk/welfare/dwf.htm

Good Luck, there are a few of us on here with Dalmatians if you need help.

Thanks Sandra,

I have quite a bit of experience in rescue just not this breed. I would imagine it will be a male, young and probably unneutered as well. My 'contact', who told me about it, is getting the address for me to go see it.
I have a few friends who own Dally's and have asked over the last day or two if they would be interested in giving a rescue a chance.

I, basically, have to take it when I go see it as the owner is just going to dump it on anyone who'll have it.

I don't want it to go to someone who might use it unfairly for breeding. The area it is in is prevalent for people who just get a dog/bitch thinking they can make money from it.

Plan of action at the moment is to get it here and temperament test it. Hopefully it is a well adjusted dog, I know I'm expecting miracles, and one of my Dally friends will be interested. One lady has been looking for a 'friend' for her bitch for a while. If it's a male then it will be neutered before going anywhere. This ladies bitch is neutered but I would feel better if the rescue was before being re-homed anyway. So, whether it's a bitch or a dog, it will be here for a few weeks.

I have other dogs, kids, cats and small furries to test it with. I use mikki muzzles when testing big dogs just as a precaution.

As long as I could 'phone someone for any breed specific advice should I come across a problem.

My Dally was very hard work as a young male.  Neuturing him did help a lot.

They are also very strong physically, something to bear in mind for his new home.

I hope it works out

Sandra

Ps   Leave all food out of reach and it is amazing how far they can reach on your worktop LOL

Sandra,

I, currently, have a Mastiff, a Bullmastiff, a Rottie and a JRT. In the past I've owned/rescued Staffies, EBT's, Dobies, Border Collies, Huskies, Rough Collies and various Mutts (this is over a very long period of time and always more than one or two at a time). Most of them were very adept at gaining access to benches and anywhere else they chose to thieve from until trained. I know, that if this dog comes to me, I will have to be very patient.
It's strength shouldn't be a problem with the breeds I'm used to. I have Halti's and other 'torture' weapons that should help in the event I need them. I also have a very secure basketball court that I am allowed to free run my dogs in. Plenty of carrier bags are carried at all times.
It will be neutered within a couple of weeks as I'm told it is in good health.
The people who have shown an initial interest, taking in mind it's not with me yet, are all Dally owners at present so are aware of the possibilities/probabilities with this dog.
Would it be better, considering it will be neutered, to re-home it with an opposite sex????
Most of the entire males I've come across haven't liked other males.

Well a Dally will be a pussy cat after your experience with the others you have listed :)

I would definately home with the opposite sex.  I wanted my second dog to be male, but knew it would cause friction with the Dally.  He lets the bitch boss him around and accepts it graciously. ;)

Even now out on walks the only time I need be worried about his temperament is if we meet an entire male.  Luckily this is quite rare.

I've no doubt I can manage the dog whether it is male or female but as I've not done a great deal of rescue over the last few years, only one or two, or three, or four !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am a tad concerned that I could make mistakes that are 'breed specific'.

At the moment it is still a 'maybe' rescue but I am praying the dog hasn't been given to someone who might maltreat it. Animal neglect is quite high in the area where it is and a Dalmation can be quite a fashion item. Or possibly someone would offer a home to get a 'quick profit' when they sell it on. Or worse still breed the poor thing to death. Don't suppose a dog would complain about that but it wouldn't do a bitch much good.

The Dally owner with the neutered bitch is offering to cover neutering costs and give me 'a little something' to help with my rescue ferrets. As I say I don't advertise the fact I will help with dogs anymore.
She also understands that the dogs papers won't be available to her. As she says, if the dog comes to me and then is amicable with hers, when neutered why would she want the papers.

As I say it's up in the air at the moment but when/if the dog gets here I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the link I will probably get in touch with them just for advice.

If you do by chance get the dogs pedigree rescue will in general contact the breeder if you dont want to keep him to see if they want him back.  They are a lovely breed and quite addictive but they are a bit of a acquired taste.

I've already said I would contacr the breeder before re-homing.
Unfortunately it is unlikely to be a breeder that would give a damn where this dog comes from.
I have in the past had to contact breeders and this would obviously be my first option.
No doubt if I do that the breeder would consider the lady who would like to give a home to this dog.

Sorry Karen,

I can't find where I said I would contact the breeder but this would obviously be the first choice. I must have being going to put it in and forgot. Thanks anyway.
I've been on to the person who offered it to me but they need to see the owner. The owners partner goes 'on holiday' on Thursday. That's the day he's at court for sentence. So I have till then. I have been told the dog is registered in the wifes name as this was my first query. I don't want an irate husband coming out of nick and asking for his dog back. He doesn't know me so I'm safe.

You poor thing.  I am trying to track down one of my liver boys.  Two blokes who split up one wanted me to have the dog one didnt in the end the one who didnt has sold the dog or so he says and I have no way of knowing where.  I have contacted rescue and various dogs homes to see if he would turn up.  I keep my ears and eyes open in case he turns up on a website for sale.

Fingers crossed you get someone what are they going to do if you cant find someone before Thursday?

The dog will come here Karen. I don't know what sex it is yet and I haven't heard from them either.

If the dog comes here I will definitely try and contact the breeder. I think it is a black spot. Don't know it's age or anything else. If I can't contact the breeder or they don't want to know then it will be neutered and I will find it a suitable home. Probably with one of the aforementioned Dally owners.

Still hoping that it hasn't been given to some no-hoper owner though as I haven't heard from the 'contact' yet. The guy who's going away know's the dogs being re-homed he just doesn't want it going before he leaves. Apparently he does love the dog but understands that his wife won't be able to cope.

I am dying to know what he's been sent down for.

Well I went to pick up the Dalmation.

The dog had been sold on Wednesday night to a bloke in the pub for £50.

Apparently he was heard to say he would make 100% profit in 2 days so I presume he's going to sell the dog on.

My daughter and I are going to try and find who/where he is and buy the dog if he'll sell it. Just to make sure it isn't passed from pillar to post.
The lady vwith the bitch is still very interested in giving it a home.

Oh for god sake the poor dog.  I think that just about sums up some peoples mentality.

Lets hope you get the poor thing back.

My daughters been to the pub, she goes in there quite often, she's asked the landlord and barman to tell the man who bought the dog to get in touch and left a number.
The landlord seems to think the mans wife won't let him sell the dog as she's wanted a dog for ages.
My daughter told him we could give them any advice or help they need if they decide to keep it.
