Ok, for all your experts out there, any advice?  I have the usual books which give some general advice but is there anything specific I need and/or should look for/at?

I take it that you mean trim not groom?  Scissor only.  They should look like a ball from all directions, short in the body, tail carried high, so trim the croup so that the tail can.  The ears should be well trimmed so that they disappear into the coat, not be exposed!
Of course, if it is as big as a Cocker and with a single coat, (and pet bred ones often are!) then do the best that you can!! ;)

well done Val.

I'm hopefully if the little horror behaves herself trimming a Pom. puppy tomorrow before I take her to her first obedience class.  E-mail me and I'll send you photo's.

Thanks Val, I can always rely on your expertise!
I am not sure what the coat is like.  I know that the mother had pups sometime ago and the coat is all that brillant.

Sorry, mail should read, that the coat is NOT all that brillant!
Thanks Spanishwaterdog! Photo's always a help and very much appreciated.  I haven't groomed/trimmed a Pom before but understand that their feet should be like a cat paw (nice and tight), ears well trimmed along the edge, etc, is this right?

Using your thumb nail pressed into your index finger to protect the ear leather, cut the hair straight across the top horizontally, making the ear length as short as possible.  Then, using your nail again to protect, cut the fur each side into a point BUT with a wider base than the ear, making sure that the ear disappears into the head/neck coat.  So as short as poss at the top but tapered at the sides.
