Topic Dog Boards / Health / Delaying a season

Has anyone ever delayed a season in their bitch ?

If so, under what circumstances did you decide to take this option?

and where there any side effects? Did the following season return as normal or did you encounter any future problems ?

Thanks in advance :)

I'd never do it myself because I know a few people in my breed who have done it & had temperament problems afterwards. May have been coincidence of course but, after all, you are messing around with hormones which I'm always reluctant to do.  I can't think of many scenarios where I would prefer to delay a season. JMO

I know people who are involved in Greyhound racing occasionaly do it to bitches, one of my first dogs was an Ex Retired racer when I had her I was aware that she had been given something to delay her season, she never had another season for well over 2 years hence the reason my vet who was at the time a Greyhound specialist would not agree to spay her.

My friend who is a vet has advised us never to do it.  She did herself and had no end of problems when she mated the bitch later.  I know it would make life easier but personally I would steer clear if you are ever planning on breeding. :)

I did once and my bitch had a pyometra afterwards. Maybe just coincidence but I wouldn't risk it again. Someone else I knew did  but when she decided she wanted to breed, her bitch didn't come into season for over two years she was too old then for a first litter.

I did it once and about 6 weeks after she started attacking my other bitch after they had lived in harmony for 4 years. Don't KNOW it was the injection but I can't help wondering and wouldn't risk it again.

On the other side I know people who do it regularly with no problem?????

Yes but did they breed from them succesfully after.

I had my first bitch escape out the front door at her first season so needed the morning after jab.  I then had her on delvesteron for a couple of years, and then decided to get her spayed.

The vet out of interest examined her womb and ovaries and found the ovaries were cystic and the womb rather fluid filled for her likeing.

With bitches hormones being so delicate to balance, and womb infection a frequent enough occurence in bitches not messed about with, it just isn't worth the risk of messing up her reproductive system if she is to be bred from.

If she isn't to be bred from she can be spayed.  I would sooner risk the side effects of spaying than those of chemical control.

I've never done so myself.
But did attend a seminar where a reproductive vet (who also breeds gundogs)
did a talk and she did not advise you to do so if you wanted to breed from your bitch.
