I brought a puppy a few weeks ago, it is a male mastiff cross Tibetan terrier, i know it sounds really weird but the man who owns the mother said his bitch was staying with a friend while he was on holiday and they mated but he didn't know nothing about it until he came home from work one day and there was a pup on the floor in the kitchen. it only had one pup, but the man was very upset because his friend new all along but was to scared to tell him.
but my questions are how was this possible? and will my dog be ok, will he grow properly or be deformed as his parents have a huge size difference? do i class him as a giant breed or small breed? what should i feed him? does any one know any website i can go on with info about other cross breeds similar to this so i can find out how they grew and if everything was ok? i am very worried about him and how he will turn out. he is 16 weeks now and weighs about 20kg he is a brindle colour and has shortish fur but looks like a big short haired tibetan terrier, but you can see some mastiff in him. please help and let me know all your concerns, with him. i just cant believe such a big dog could mate a little terrier.
Can you join guest as I think I may have something intresting to show you :) I will send some contact details.

Where there's a will there's a way. My friend had a miniature poodle and a Rottweiller - the poodle would stand on the arm of the chair when she was ready to be mated so she'd be the right height. Luckily the rottie was neutered so he wasn't interested! I think your pup's mum was lucky to not need a caesarian, but puppies of most breeds (not including the toys) don't vary that much in size at birth.
I wouldn't worry in the least - a dog is a dog no matter if it's a chihuahua or a great dane. If he's that big at this age, I'd say it's safe to treat him like a giant breed. If he's normal now, I can't see him suddenly developing any horrendous structural defect as long as you raise him right.

"but puppies of most breeds (not including the toys) don't vary that much in size at birth."
Phoebe,
I have to take issue with this, if you look in the Book of the Bitch you will find that there can be an enormous difference in pup size even of breeds of similar size, and there's a BIG difference between a Mastiff newborn ( 16-24 oz) and a Tibetan Terrier newborn ( 4-5 oz) (Tibetan Terriers aren't toys) That's a huge difference, I'm amazed that the bitch survived the pregnancy :(
Putting incorrect statements on this board of that nature will only encourage the idiots who want to breed stupid crosses and may prevent owners of bitches who have had accidental matings seeking appropriate advice, and risking their bitch unnecessarily :(
Not trying to upset you but many people take the advice on this board and act on it without checking ;)

Sorry Dill - me bad (locks self in cage). Just read what I've put and what I typed was not what I meant to type. I started off right with the I'm surprised that she didn't need a caesarian, but then I obviously lost the plot... last time I post after a few glasses of wine, I promise. :D
Just to put a disclaimer on anybody that might think it's a good idea to breed a huge breed male to a small breed female...
1) Bandog breeders almost always put the bull terrier breed male to the mastiff breed female due to vice versa causing birthing difficulties.
2) DON'T DELIBERATELY CROSS BREED - FULL STOP!

With such disparate crosses it is impossible to tell if they will take after one prent or the toehr more or end up an even mix.
I heard of a cross between a Mini dachshund and Rottie. Two pups resulted one ended up like a large standard Dachs, short legged but more Rottie for size, and the other was a small square dog of normal proportions (from Mum) but small size (from Dad).

I just re read the thread. A male mastiff cross female tibetan sounds a bit unlikely to me. I would imagine the female tibetan to be badly damaged by such a mating. Is it possible that the cross was tibetan mastiff cross another mastiff breed?

My old Afghan cross terrier was the result of an Afghan getting to a Parson Russell-sized terrier in her own back garden

Luckily the Afghan was a smallish one

the owners of the terrier bitch didn't know it was an Affie that got to her at first (some sleuthing later turned up the culprit) and four pups were born by Caesarian. Three of the pups were smooth coated (like mum) and grew huge, easily as big as an Afghan

they kept the 'fluffy one' (which I later rescued) and he grew into a Bedlington sized dog with a long coat, like a miniature Afghan, his temperament was very Afghan, but his brothers were sharper and more terrier like, not good in a dog that size :( :(
