Topic Other Boards / Foo / #2 son update...........
- By digger [gb] Date 04.10.05 20:01 UTC
He was taken back in this morning having been discharged last night.  He collapsed while playing with his Dad at the kitchen table while I was out (caring Mum huh? NOT :( ) I got home to find Dave on the phone to 999 and holding #2 son up in the kitchen chair to stop him hitting the deck.......

It's vary scarey to have to go and stop the traffic to let a paramedic with two tones and blue flashing lights for your own son........  He was rushed in again, he couldn't talk, move arms or legs, compained of pain in his back/neck.  Eventually he came round in A & E and was giving some VERY Strange answers to the questions we were asking (to try ang guage his level of consicousness) - he was telling us he didn' know me, and thought his Dad was George Washington!  He thought his own name was Philip (which is his second name) and got very cross when we called him Scotty.....

Now I am DREADING the news the MRI scan may bring tomorrow.  Please keep him in your prayers.

Thank you

Fran

Thank you so much for all your good wishes and PM's.

The MRI scan went OK - only had to 'redo' one set of scans because he moved....... First indications are that there is nothing abnormal detected. But they are faxing them to the John Radcliffe in Oxford for final analysis.

In the mean time, we have spent a good hour with the Community pyschiatric nurse (Big Dave was in his element playing the 'concerned father' never using one word when 10 would do......) Heaven only knows what she made of that!

When I got home though, there was a message  from a member of another forum who'd had similar symptoms, so we've left a note of their condition with the Drs, who will hopefully arrange tests to prove (or disprove) that his bike accident 10 weeks or so ago and the resulting whiplash are what has caused this.........

BTW - when we left the lad this evening, he was feeling sooooooo much better!

Oh Fran, only just seen this.... My prayers and thoughts are with you and your son right now.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 05.10.05 22:54 UTC
Fran that's good news in some ways.

Whiplash is a good idea!!  My symptoms of severe pain in the neck, shoulder, numbness of the elbow, thumb and finger started 4 days after an air hostess dropped a heavy bag full of bottles on my head before we even left Manchester airport for Spain.

I felt OK after the initial shock so never took her name down, that night i was sick all nigth and then the above sym[ptoms started less than a week later and they are still not back to normal now a year later!

Unfortunately I said that I was fine and didn't take her name down or anything so there's nothing that I can do about it!

Hi Fran,

hope they get to the source of the problem soon ;)  Keeping you on the healing thoughts, prayers and best wishes list!  Good luck,  Teri
- By Charanda [de] Date 06.10.05 06:48 UTC
Hi Fran,  I'm so glad to hear that he was in better spirits when you left him yesterday.  Lets hope that the results come back and the doctors will know what they are treating - it must be the not knowing that is so difficult.  :-(

Keep us posted and my thoughts are with your family.

A friend of mine was in a bad car accident 4 years ago, "all she had was whiplash"  which was a miracle as they spent 2 hours cutting her out of the car, she's been unable to work since, symptoms seem to be similar to your son.  She's getting about more now after lots of physio but was really bad at first.

Hope you get good news soon, and they find out what it is.

Thinking of you

My husband was in a head-on crash 9 years ago and had whiplash injuries.  They eventually found that his spinal cord (that's what Royal Free said) was being pinched by 2 vertabrae which was causing the tingling, numbness and cramps in his arm and shoulder.

It seems that not only your son but you also are in much better spirits.  You must feel that at last you are getting somewhere.  Good luck, looks like things are moving along now.
- By digger [gb] Date 06.10.05 18:18 UTC
Scott is home :)  We still don't know what is causing the problem, and after going 26 hours without an 'attack' we had another one this evening, but it cleared a LOT quicker than some of the others (which have lasted up to 4-5 hours)

The specialist radiographer at MK General hospital is happy with the MRI scan results (NAD) but they have been couriered (no expense spared ;)) to the specialist at The John Radcliffe in Oxford for the neurologist there to see, with a note regarding the experiences of the other forum members experiences ;)  Hopefully he will be able to tell the MK team his thoughts tomorrow, and they will contact us here at home. We have an appointment in Oxford next Wednesday.........

Once again, thanks to every one here for keeping me sane (Big Dave was a lost cause!)

For those who are having similar experiences - the condition I was told to consider is VertebroBasilar Dissection - it's not common - the paediatrician had never heard of it - but it might be worth mentioning to your consultant...

Glad Scott's back at home Fran :)

And if you don't mind a very strange woman sending cyber {{{hugs}}} to Big Dave, pass them on!

Fran

Have just caught up on this and what an awful time for you all :(

Do you know which Neurologist you are seeing at the JR as I have been seeing an excellant woman called Jackie Palace for my back and neck problems.

She comes highly recommended :)

Hope they get to the bottom of it and he gets back to normal soon .

Hi Lucy, we are seeing Dr Tony McShane.  I understand there is a large neurology dept there and he specialises in paedeatric neurology.  We're just waiting for the phone call from MKGH with the results of the full analysis of the MRI scan.
- By floozy [gb] Date 08.10.05 18:04 UTC
I used to be a paeds sec at MKGH.  Dr McShane had a really good reputation, the Paediatricians at the time I worked there all thought highly of him.   Hope everything turns out well for your son.

Any news ?

- By digger [gb] Date 12.10.05 20:03 UTC
Sorry, yes, we have news.  Dr Mc Shane says he is the second boy he's seen today with 'Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures'  They seem to be caused by stressful psychological experiences or emotional trauma. Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures are one way that the body indicates excessive stress.  Problem is, we haven't got much of an idea what the stress he's feeling is - he can't think of anything, but in the last year there has been a lot of 'stuff' going on in the family - starting with Big Dave's DVT, his Nan's death, now he's not talking to his Mum, he's changed jobs and shift patterns (which means he's spending less time with us as a family, something I've begged him to change, so there has been stress between us too) Basically - who knows?  Tonight I took him to Cubs with me and he was fine until it was time to pack up and come home, we had the warning signs in the legs, he blacked out within a few mins of being in the car, and was still out when we got home :(  We left him to it and had something interesting going on in the kitchen........  Then we heard some moaning coming from the living room - then he noticed the noise from the lap top (his favourite game) and he came round quicker, so he was told if he could walk to the kitchen, he could play with it........  He's been playing happily out there for 15 mins, but now it's bedtime and he says he's struggling.....  I think this is going to be hard on all of us...
- By LJS Date 12.10.05 20:13 UTC
Oh dear.

Have they suggested some sort care plan or counselling (sp) now as it sounds like it may now be the right thing to do now :) Also perhaps it might help if they have a support group for parents with this condition as they be able to give you some advice as well ?

I do hope you sort your little man out asap :)

I'm so sorry, digger. At least it's being taken seriously now. This must be hell on all of you. :(

So sorry to hear this Digger, but at least now you know what you're dealing with and they are taking it seriously.  Hope things will start to improve now.

Yesterday evening ended up with him being carried up to bed fireman style because he claimed his legs woulnd't work - but when he was put down at the top of the stairs, suddenly they DID work (if they hadn't, he'd have fallen downstairs).......  He was put to bed, and he moaned and carried on for about half an hour, calling Daddy (interestingly, only Daddy.......) until he fell asleep.  This morning he remembers nothing.  He's gone to school, and I had a call about an hour ago - he was complaining of a head ache and numbness in arms and legs.  So I went up there, told him Daddy was busy but would be at home when he got home from school, with the teaching assistants help we got him to walk to the medical room where he lay for 10 mins in the dark before suddenly sitting up and saying he felt better and would go back to class........

We know he's not putting on these attacks, he can not control it - but we are trying to cut down on the 'reward' he gets during them, now we know he's not at any risk, and concentrate on rewarding him when he's behaving normally, by providing extra interaction with him as a whole family. - doG, they're just like dogs really :)
- By Bluebell [gb] Date 13.10.05 14:34 UTC
So glad to hear that it isnt critical, although still serious and worrying! I hope that the NHS is providing some support and or counsiling (sp) and havnt just left you all to 'get on with it'. ((hugs)) jan
- By Bluebell [gb] Date 08.10.05 19:22 UTC
Goodness Fran I havnt really been around this week so only just seen this. How awful for you and Big Dave. Really hope that you find out what is causing it at JR this week. (((hugs to you all))). Jan

I hope things manage to get resolved sooner rather than later, Fran  :)
If you ever need to chat, you know where I am!
