Hello everyone, I have a problem and I hope one of you technical people might be able to help.   We have sky digital and when you record something you have to watch what you are recording.  The problem is when we record the picture quiality is not as good as when we just watch sky.  We thought it was the video recorder so we bought a dvd recorder and had the same problem, so we thought maybe it was the tv so we bought a new tv - same problem, so maybe it is the sky box but we dont want to go and buy a new box if this is normal.  It is only when recording that the picture quality is slightly worse.  Any ideas anyone before i call out someone to take a look.  Thank you in advance.

I'd look at replacing the SCART lead first if the poor quality is the same whatever recorder you use.  The golden rule is always replace the cheapest component in a failing system first ;)

We have cable tv, but they scramble their films so you can't record them :-(  but music and normal programs you can record onto DVD in a really good quality.

We can only record through sky a program we are watching too.  Or you can turn off the TV on the channel you want to record.  The picture quality is always good too.

I was advised to buy good quality scart leads when I bought the TV,   The one going from the TV is a gold one, the video is an ordinary one, but a good quality one.

Have you got the Sky signal going to the video/DVD recorder first, then on to the TV?

thank you for your replies, i will try replacing the scart lead to see if that works, i dont know if the signal is going to the dvd first but everything only works if its connected the way it is at the moment and we have tried every way possible to connect everything.  If that does not work i think i will have to call out a repair man as we are just not technically minded. thanks again.

OK - I'm no expert but I regularly record onto DVD programmes that I have saved onto my SKY+ hard drive.  If you look at the back of the recordable DVD box there is a table explaining that you will get a high quality picture if you do not go over 60 minutes recording.  If you record for instance 360 minutes this is classed as super long play and will reduce the picture quality.  The same settings should be found on the recorder?????

With our old system (Sky) you could only record the sky channel you were actually watching.  We splashed out £50 on the sky+ offer and now have Sky+!!  I wouldn't go back to video for anything, it's amazing!  It's easy to record and has streamlined our tv watching no end.
