Hiya All
At what stage in Whelp would you see a change in size in the Bitch? At do you find Ultrasounds useful.

Hi I had my girl scaned at 29 days, to see if she was in whelp, not to see how many.
The scan showed she was in whelp and we saw 4 pups, she went on to have 10.
I would not have mine scanned again as it stressed her out too much, and two days after the scan I knew she was in whelp.

Hi
Thanks for your reply. I had mine scanned on Monday (5 weeks). They could only see what they persumed to be one pup. we saw a black circle with to white dots moving up and down in it and now I am confused. I don't actually think they scanned her very well. Have an appointment for another scan next monday.

I had my bitch scanned at 28 days from 1st mating but it showed that she had probably taken from a later mating, saw 3 pups she had 6. I wouldn't get it done at the vets again, the sheep scanners are so much better but Like goldengirl I knew she was anyway about 2 days later as her sides started to thicken. I suppose at the end of the day it is to satisfy OUR curiousity so not sure wether thats a good thing or not, if they are they are and you will know soon enough ;-)

hi bassetlover hope you dont mind me asking how big is your bitch know and can you tell if she is pregnant, my bitch would be due 26th october but she is only slightly bigger and feels very firm in the belly with saggy teats although on the scan the vet couldnt see anything she said she couldnt swear she wasnt pregnant, helpful or what, good luck with your girl and any help would be very greatful thanks.
Hi, i to am hopefully expecting, due date 6th november i havn't had my girl scaned yet, but the vet has done a urine test last week and found protien in it? it this a good sign?

Dunno about dogs, but it's a bad sign when a human has protein in their urine.
Thanks, i'm back at the vets 2moro , he didn't seem to concerned she had a course of antibiotics so fingers crossed
Maybe it's just me but I am not keen on all the too-ing and fro-ing to the vets, it's stressful enough as it is without constantly going back and forth and vets seem to give AB's at the drop of a hat probably because alot of them have no idea about whelping. I am pretty certain that there is no test to check for pregnancy in a dogs urine? With humans yes, with dogs no. There is a blood test called relaxin but i am not too sure how accurate it is.
if there is cause for concern then go to the vets but the risks of infection etc become increased with each visit and it puts the bitch under more stress, especially if she dislikes going to the vet in the first place.

Yes, I agree, I'm amazed that scanning to confirm pregnancy is so popular. There are plenty of other things to spend my money on, I'm old fashioned I suppose, I just wait and see.
Of course scanning has a place, but I'd only do it if I thought something was wrong. For instance, in July Kitty was generally unwell at 5 weeks in whelp, a scan confirmed that she had lost her pups, (they were dead) and she had a uterine infection, so she had an emergency spay.
But as for routine scanning, no.

I had Phoebe scanned last night by the sheep scanner (Sam); Phoebe wasn't eating a lot, I did enquire at our vets about scanning but when they mentioned that they would have to sedate her I chose not to take her along; I felt this would distress her too much as she doesn't like the vets as it is. Phoebe was very relaxed with Sam which relaxed me she stood for her and was happy to let her scan away - this was done at home; she has 7 puppies confirmed so I'm relieved that it's now confirmed and explains why she was off her food - which is now picking up quite a lot. She was scanned at 31 days from her last mating date.
Hi again, i'd originly taken her to the vets as i was concerned she had an infection ( very strong smelling urine and having accidents in the night, very unlike her) also the stud owner advised me that she should have a course of AB at 3 weeks incase of any infection he said he did it with all his bitches, i thought this was common practise? Anyway i canceled 2days app she seems much better ,a bit of her food but no more accidents no more foul smell!! just worried if an infection may of hurt the pups?
Hello again , sorry forgot 2 ask where can i get a sheep scanner (manchester area) thanks.
Sometimes the smell can actually be the anal glands, not always though so completely understand your concern. My friends bitch had this once when I looked after her and I thought it was the urine then I realised her anal glands were full and as she was squating some of the foul smell had been released.
I think there are 2 schools of thought re AB's some people always give them regardless of any infection and some believe in treating only if there is actually something to treat, no right or wrong way, just different.
