The first person I would go to is the breeder of your boy, 3 is really quite old for a dog to start stud work. and your breeder will know all the lines in his pedigree. It is not that easy to have a stud dog, its not a matter of having a bitch ready for standing and just letting your boy get on with it, its a lot of hard work for you as the bitch owner has to hold the bitch steady and then you have to help your boy and then hold him onto the bitch and when they tie, you can be sitting their with sore arms for at least 30 mins !!! I had a bitch here yesterday and she was not ready for my dog she was snapping at him, but, the owner of the bitch was adament that because she was putting her tail over to the side she was ready, it was only her 9th day. and this is a repeat mating. we shall see what happens over the next few days. you must get someone that knows how to handle a dog at stud to help you. I am still learning. and I can assure you its not easy.

more to the point, how on earth can letting a bt, which already sounds a bit over sexed, mate with a bitch, be beneficial? Sorry to sound such a kill joy but this sounds a bit irresponsible to me!

Must say I agree with Sam. Mating dogs is not easy, and very few people would want to pay a stud fee for an unproven dog with an inexperienced handler, its just too risky for everyone involved. I really wouldn't bother putting your dog at risk, sadly very few responsible breeders would want to use an unshown (presumably) unproven dog. I really dont mean to sound unfriendly, just telling you like it is. What he's never had he'll never miss, and once he's had, he may become a bit of a nuisance when nearby bitches are in season, you could be storing up trouble for yourself, without meaning to. If you were hoping to keep a puppy from one of his litters why not consider contacting his breeder and try and buy a puppy that is a close relation, it would be likley to be like your own dog and have a simaliar nature. Just a thought.

I totally agree! Like all dogs, once they have had one bitch, they want more and can sometimes become very dominant and aggressive. The last thing you want is an aggressive BT. Please think very carefully and take lots of advice from Bully people who are very experienced in owning a stud dog. If you want him to stop trying it on with your leg then the best thing might be to get him castrated.

Please see my reply to the question 'breeding'!!

what has your dog to offer the breed other than his sex drive? Is he an outstanding example of his breed (objectively)! What is his health Status and that of his ancestors? How good is his temperament? this is very important, the breed has been banned in Germany, as it is considered a fighting dog, it behoves all custodians and breeders of these bull breeds to ensure they do not add fuel to the fire of those who want to extend these laws throughout the EEC!

I love Bull terriers, think in the right hands they are super dogs, but there is a 'macho' element in society that wants aggresive warrior breeds, how do you know that this isn't the sort of person who would use your dog?

My advice, have him CASTRATED he is now mature so he will not suddenly turn into a wimpy looking Eunuch, but will be a lot happier, not having this powerful FORCE driving him to abuse your leg!!
