one of my pups that was born last night has taken a turn for the worse :( he hasnt been suckling much today and earlier this evening he suddenly stopped breathing, i acted quickly, i swung him and rubbed him in a towel until he started breathing again, i rang my vet who came out and had a look at the little guy , he says he doesnt hold out much hope for the little one he says he cant see anything wrong with him other than being the smallest of the litter and that the next 24 hrs will be crucial, he's very weak and not moving around as much as his litter mates :(, while i was waiting for vet i quickly made up a glucose solution and gave him some, since then he has actually picked up quite abit and is now having a feed from mum :)
i would like to know (as my vet didnt tell me, he seems to have given up on the pup already ) how often and how much glucose should i give him? unlike my vet im not prepared to give up on the little one just yet he has so far proven to be a fighter and i will do anything to make sure he survives
any advice would be great
well the glucose i gave him seems to have done the trick he had a good feed and doesnt seem to want to let go of the teat :) he seems to be alot more lively aswell so fingers crossed the little mite proves the vet wrong :)

Hi, sorry can't help but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the little one
I had a puppy the same as this in my last litter, and i am very pleased to say she has just celebrated her 1st birthday! She was also the smallest in the litter, didnt move around at all and vet also gave me no hope. However i gave "Electrolite" solution with a sringe, as much as puppy would take, also i let puppy feed off the mum seperate from the rest of the litter also let puppy feed before the litter so she had lots of milk there if she needed it. It was hard work, and you lose alot of sleep, but its so worth it in the end, the bond you will form with that puppy will be unbreakable (i kept my girl lol)
Let us know how he progresses xx

make sure he is warm and well fed thats the main thing, watch his breathing,
if he is having problems call vet, when he wants to feed
put him on the teats next to back legs (IMHO they are the most
nutrious) i am sure some body
else will be along with more advice soon
but in the mean time i hope this helps

hi dont know if you read my post but i lost a pup today, but was given a glucose paste by the vet who reccommended to mix into a small ball put it on the pups tongue, which the pup will swallow and to give it four times a day, dont know if yours is the same glucose paste as mine.but i wish you all the luck in the world and hope the little man pulls through,as its heart wrenching when they dont.hope this helps debs
hi debs, im so sorry to hear about your pup :(
my vet didnt give me anything he seems to think that the little man wont make it through the night and said he will be very surprised to find otherwise, other than that the vet wasnt very helpful im afraid but then he wasnt my normal vet he was the on call vet for this evening :( , i have liquid glucose that i made up according to instructions i found on this site and i must say it worked a treat so far, i just cant find any info on how much to give him or how often :) its been over 4 hours since i had to revive the little guy and he still going strong he has fed at least 3 times from mum which is more than he has done all day, he is still a little weak and slow but moving alot more than he was a few hours ago , he is breathing alot better too :) im not building my hopes too high yet though, he has a long way to go before he is out of the woods and i will do anything to help him :)

hope the little man makes is kwackerz9, i dont like the sound of that vet though, a bit harsh aint he! let us know how he gets on through the night

Sorry I can't add anything else but will be keeping everything crossed for this little man.
well my little man made it through the night :D the change in him this morning to what he was like last night is amazing you would never think that i had to revive this little guy, he is much much more lively and almost as strong as his litter mates he is managing to find the teat and stay on by himself this morning which he couldnt do last night and he is feeding with gusto which has to be a good sign, he had another bad turn at about midnight last night, i gave him some more glucose and it seemed to do the trick, so much for the vet saying he wouldnt make it until morning huh! well my little man has certainly proved he is a fighter :D just got to hope that he keeps it up now :D
I'm so pleased to hear he made it through the night, fingers crossed that he continues to improve ;-) and well done for keeping him going.

thats fantastic news, im so glad he's ok, must be a real fighter well done 2 u for keeping him going
thanks chocoholic and kesha :)
the vet was gobsmacked when i rang him this morning and told him that the little one was still with us going strong, it just goes to show even the so called experts can be wrong :D the little man is still doing well and getting better with each hour that passes :D ive never seen such a tiny thing with so much fight and determination :D the vet did say that his survival and improvement was probably alot to do with my acting quickly and my sheer determination not to give up on him, at one point last night i actually had the little mite tucked up inside my bra keeping him warm :O i am starting to feel the strain of having no sleep since sunday though :( i keep trying to grap 40 winks but i just cant settle yet :( i will keep you all updated on his progress :D

Great news that the little man is still fighting :-) Do try & get some rest/sleep though, I know how hard it is but it's important :-) Hope the little man continues from strength to strength :-)
just to let you all know that the little man is doing brilliantly and is going from strength to strength :D he is feeding well and moving about as good as the rest of the litter :D ive finally managed to get a few hours sleep but it wasnt easy i never realised how noisy newborn puppies are until now lol :D

Great that he's improved so rapidly! I haven't had a litter yet but after all the tales my friends have told me and I have heard on here, I am losing my confidence in vets!!!
Glad to hear he is improving, big pat on the back for all your hard work!! I'm aslo beginning to question some vets after stories from friends ;-)

Ahhh well done. Hope he carried on to improve. You'll end up finding out that he'll be the best in the litter, fingers crossed!

hi is it the same glucose as you use in cake making ??
thanks every one :D
i have been told you can use the same glucose used for cake making luvapug, i actually made mine up using instructions i found on the net, i mixed 1 tablespoon of sugar with 3 tablespoons of water so that it was like a syrup and gave 2.5mls to him through a babies medicine syringe every 20 mins for couple of hours until he picked up enough to feed from mum on his own :D i dont know for definite if the mixture i made was 100% right but it worked, and to look at the little man now you would never believe it is the same pup that was at deaths door on tuesday night. he is twice the size he was, 100 times stronger and more active and is now barging the other pups out of the way to get at the teat he wants lol :D :D

Fantastic, and well done to you.its good when the outcome is a nice one, keep battling little man!
I bought glucose syrup from Llloyds Pharmacy, I think it was 99p and it is the same stuff you can use when baking. I gave it to my bitch during whelping to help her energy levels and also kept it for any struggling puppies, not that I needed it. I had to ask for it though as it's not something they always keep on the shelves. I think it's a really handy thing to have in the whelping box and has a long shelf life too. Makes me glad now after reading this thread and how it's helped this little puppy what I would have done without it in a similar situation. So I think it's a good thing for anyone to have in the whelping box and I am sure Kwacker will agree.
