Hey
Our skye terrier puppy was born 10 days ago, and we are now starting to get all the essentials before we can bring him home in 7weeks time (counting every day!). I was just wondering if anyone knew what size crate we should buy? There seems to be no clear suggestion on the internet pet sites with regard to which size would be best. Any help would be muchly appreciated.
Thanks
Sarah
Hi,
I hope someone can come and give you the exact size you need, I'm affraid I don't know how big your breed is when fully grown, but we are getting a rare breed puppy soon, so on the sites that stated the sizes and then what sort of dog it would suit, we looked for dogs of the same size as ours and that gave us an idea of what size we needed.
I am off to Google Skye Terriers now - will take me all afternoon, Google and I don't get on!!! ;) :P
Good luck with your search and your puppy :D

Hi
I believe from what I've read about the breed they will be 10-11 inches tall and 20-21 inches long, (please correct me if I'm wrong!)This seems to fall in between 2 crate sizes so I wasn't sure whether to get the bigger or smaller one? I did try looking at similar sized dogs but still couldn't decide!? He will only be in the crate at night, as someone is home nearly all day and we are also getting a puppy pen for the daytime.
Thanks
Sarah
Hi Sarah,
Others may have other ideas (it will be worth listening to them, because I am a complete novice!!) but my personal choice would be to go for the bigger crate, I wouldn't like to think of a dog squashed into a smaller crate. You could always get a crate divider, and place it close to one end when the dog is bigger, just to make it a snugger fit.
Does you breeder not use crates for her adults? They may be able to help with the sizes.

Hi
Yes my breeder does use crates, just didn't want to trouble her with questions when she is obviously very busy with the puppies at the moment! I can always ask when we go and visit the puppies in a few weeks, just very keen to buy everything in prepration as so excited about getting the puppy even though it sme time away.
Thanks
Sarah
I know what you mean Sarah, we are just as excited, I am sure your breeder won't mind you ringing her very quickly, or better still if you can email her, then she can get back to you at a time to suit her :D
Let us know when you get your pup :D
hi were can you buy a crate divider from?
I'm not sure actually, I have seen that when you buy certain cages from certain places you can buy a cage divider as an 'extra', I am sure someone will know where you can get them, if not try a cardboard box in one end, or I suppose if it was done carefully, you could get a square of chicken wire or the like, and bend the edges around the cage bars, as I said you would have to do it carefully though else your dog may find a way of getting it off, or catch the ends of the chicken wire, which could do some serious damage.

I'd err on the side of too big rather than too small. BTW have a look at the crates and play pens on Ebay. There are several suppliers and they are cheaper than most pet shops. I have a sheltie sized crate from Ebay and while it isn't as strongly built as my very big Croft cage, it is fine for a small breed.
Also have a look
here there really cheap for large crates

They are not a very tall dog but quite long. I would imagine a 31inch long x 21inch wide x 24 inch tall crate would be ideal, as this would fit my breed if it were just taller, but because they are prick eared I use the next size up that is 27 inches tall, and 2 feet by 3 feet base size and can easily get two of my 20inch at shoulder dogs.
