Topic Dog Boards / Health / Hypo allergenic chews??
- By hairydog [gb] Date 02.10.05 13:28 UTC
My goldie is allergic to beef. fish chicken etc, on JWB food, ok on it, also on their treats, and ok, but does like from time to time a chew of a bone. Any of you out there that could suggest a hypoallergenic chew for him to chew at.?
Tried the carrot etc no joy, not intrested, we used to give him the cigar type chews but then found out they were made out of beef, and he started chewing his feet, after eating them.Since we stopped them the feet chewing has practically stopped.
Any ideas or suggestions welcome.

Get him a nylabone - can get from any pet shop. My dog will chew on them for hours and they are, I believe, hypo-allergenic.

Good thinking - mine love Nylabones but only the original flavour - the chicken one has hardly been chewed but the original needs replacing as they've gradually eaten half of it.

Also how is your dog with pork? You can get hide chews made from pork which might be worth a try.

Hi Pheobe.
which are the ones made from pork please?
do you know what they are called?
I also have a dog who can't tolerate beef or lamb and need something for her to chew on. Mainly as recreational, and as I can't use raw lamb or beef bones, and chicken and pork ones aren't very big I need to find something that will last for a while and that she has to work on.

Well, obviously pigs ears, trotters and snouts are made of pork - he-he! Got to admit they don't last 5 minutes in my house but the dogs love them. I've definitely seen a range called 'porkies' in Pets At Home and there is a company that does 'parma ham' bones which are a large roasted pork bone. The pet stall in my local market does pork bones about 6" long but I've never tried them as they're a bit small for my dogs and I know a lot of people aren't keen on giving cooked bones.

Thanks. I did know about the ears and snouts, I just thought you may have found some actual ones like the rawhide chews that are quite large.

Oh yes, there definitely are some like rawhide chews out there. They're the ones I mentioned called 'Porkys' and they're made by a company called 'Pet Brands'. They do all different shapes of pork hide chews. If you do a search for "Pet Brands" "porkys" you should come up with several places you can get them online. (not sure if I'm allowed to post retail links)
