Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Eye problem in Cavalier King Charles
- By Guest [gb] Date 03.10.05 12:43 UTC
My vet has just diagnosed my 3 year old cavalier king charles spaniel as having Corneal Dystrophy in both eyes which result in small opaque marks on the cornea which are called lipid deposits.  Unfortunately, he hadn't seen them in a long time and wasn't sure what to do and said that he would need to speak to an eye specialist.  Has anyone else ever experienced this condition with their dogs and whether this problem caused their dogs to have impaired vision or even go blind? If anyone has got any information/experience on this I would be grateful.  Thanks

This link might be of help.

Referral to an eye specialist is one option

WOW that's interesting!!  I was told many years ago by an Opthalmologist that dystrophies were fatty deposits that weren't a problem!!

Well my dogs have had them & then they disappeared & they all have clear eyes so perhaps there are different types

> Corneal lipid deposits <

> Corneal dystrophies are seen in older animals and usually present as bilateral, progressive, degenerative lesions. Lipid deposits may appear in the corneal stroma, and sometimes other materials can become deposited.e.g. calcium. Treatment is rarely indicated but an underlying cause should be sought (e.g. hyperlipidaemia, hypercalcaemia) and treated if possible. <

I changed their diet slightly & they have never come back They were never there longer enough to show to a eye specialist !
