Hi deb, they dont allway come away with each pup, but are you sure she hasent eaten them as pups were born. keep an eye on her she should pass them at the end of welping , if you think she has retaned any you must take her to vets , or she will end up ill. regards debbie.

As my pups were being born I thought my girl was just chewing through  the cord but after 2 pups were born noticed she also ate the placenta in one, practically sucking it in whole as it came out. With the last pup there was no placenta immediately and after cutting the cord she kept pulling at the chewed off end still attatched inside .This came itself after an hour ,and what seemed to be a few contractions .

hi all thanks again for the replies, just an update mum doing brill, had 3 boys and 3 girls, all seem to be doing fine although mum has chewed the cord right down on one of the little girls, which did bleed quite a bit but fingers crosed she seems ok now.oh the joys eh ! we all love it.

Thats what my bitch had, 3 boys, 3 girls a lovely even number :-) just keep an eye for any more after births, my bitch ate them so quick it was very hard to count, she finished whelping at 8.40am and dropped an after birth at 2.30pm that afternoon and another one 9.30pm at night so just keep a close eye on her. Re the cords, my bitch was obsessed with the cords, she really wouldn't leave them alone!!  and like yours really wouldn't leave one in particular and it kept bleeding, I just tied the end off with some thread to stem the bleeding and just kept an eye on Mum :-)

sadly we lost one of the little girls at 12.00p.m today, she wasnt suckling at all and was constantly cold, did everything we could, the vet gave us some glucose paste to try her with a she was also gasping,he was calling to see her at 1.30,so as we didnt have to take her out in the cold,my hubby went to the vets at ten to twelve to pick up the glucose paste but unfortunately didnt make it back in time,it was too late.We have buried her under the tree in the garden now named the puppy tree[by my children] and we have named her angel.its so sad, only with us 17 hours but she has touched our hearts immensley, there has been so many tears, but leaving on a happier note the other five are doing well and mum bless her is absolutely wonderful.

I'm really sorry to hear about your puppy, it's very difficult dealing with the joy of the live puppies but also the passing of the little one...a real emotional rollercoaster :-(

thank you all so much for the kind words they mean so much,i saw my son who is 10 out by the tree where we have buried her tonight,i went out to make sure he was ok,and he was saying a prayer for her before he went to bed,he told me he was going out to put his bike away, but once he was in bed i went out to take the dogs for a run and noticed his bike still outside,i went upstairs to tell him he had forgotten to put his bike away and he said "ok mum i know,do you not understand i just wanted a quiet moment alone with angel" he was sobbing, i have never known him to be so emotional,[bless him].Mum and other 5 pups are coming on great.

I always sigh when I hear folks say "We're going to have a litter so that the children can experience the birth."  If only they knew that many breeders actually experience heartache too and I'm sure that's not what they plan for their children. :(

It's a tough lesson to learn for your son.  Please give him a hug from a nutty dog lady. :)
