hi im new here and need some advice
my girl is 54 days in whelp, I started taking her temperature today as advised to do so around 1 week before her due date, I was told her normal temp during pregnancy should be between 100f and 101f and that a temp of 99f or below indicates that whelping is very close .. her temp today is 99f so im a little confused, does this mean that she could be closer to whelping than we thought?
she seems ok in herself other than wanting to go out more often and she has actually started retiring to her whelping box of her own accord it has taken over a week for her to do this.
any advice that could put my mind at ease a little would great,
thanks

I didn't find the temp taking worked for me at all I'm afraid though I know alot of peopel swear by it. My girls temp was never within the range that any of the books/websites were telling me was normal. Her's was 99 and lower in the 7 days before she whelped which according to books she should have whelped imminently. In fact I actually gave up taking it the last few days as It was all over the place! I knew she was in labour when she started digging and going into deep sleeps. Sorry not much help.

thanks for that,
her temp has gone up today to 99.8f and she is pretty much her normal self besides wanting to eat anything and everything edible she sees.
i will keep taking her temp over next few days and see how it goes

is it normal for a bitches temperature to drop twice ? my girls temp dropped yesterday afternoon to 98.5 f, it went back up 99.8f last night and this morning has dropped again to 98.8f, im a little confused but thats not hard to do :D

hi ,the same happened here ,yesterday morning her temp dropped to 98.5 again , then a dog bit her when I was walking her .Later on she panted a bit and started checking out areas behind the sofa etc.Last night at midnight she was digging the tiled floor in the little room I have for her. Then finally at 7am she went out for poohs and couldnt do it , panting began more heavily with more nesting at 9 and by 10am she was definately starting as she was crying pitifullly while digging . At 10.30 she began straining and at 1045 delivered her 1st.
The actual onset was much more recognisable than anything she did in earlier days, she seemed to nest and cry with an urgency .She delivered laying down.
I hope you have an outcome soon , regard to you Sally

I'm being honest, the temp taking didn't work for me, my bitches temp was all over the place in the last week, it dropped to about 98 twice then went up to 99 but never went over 99!!! all very confusing. She didn't really show many labour signs. VERY light digging and deep sleeping. Went out to the loo at 5.00am, tried to do the toilet, didn't have the runs. Waters broke at 6.00am, was sick within less than a minute and had the 1st puppy within less than 3 minutes of being sick!!!! no contractions for ages, nothing! Just a few pushes and first puppy was born, no drama at all.
She had 4 matings days 10,12,15 & 17 and whelped 62 days to the day 15 mating. You know she is due so as long as you don't leave her unattended hopefully all will go well. If you feel the temp taking isn't working personally I would stop, unless of course you think something is wrong. Because if you like me, the fact that it's not what the books says will drive you mad!!! LOL

The temperature taking has never worked for me either as you say it seems to be all over the place in the last week!

I have had bitches stay in the 99 range for a couple of weeks.  When it stays low for 24 hours is when you watch.

I can't find the thread from last night where Kwackers bitch was whelping?  She'd had 2 pups last time I saw, just wondered if there were any more & if everything went well?

Hooray, congrats for both of you and sorry about the stillborns. My friend's bitch had 4 this morning, which I am thrilled about cos she's been trying for 2 1/2 years!! The bitch only started looking pregnant in the last couple of days, so I'm impressed she managed 4! :-) I'm so jealous of you all!
