My dog needs to have his eyelids operated on and I want to organise this soon.  Does anyone know how long his stitches are likely to stay in as he has his brother with him so someone will need to be with them constantly.

10 to 14 days if I remember correctly. How old is your boy?

Just thought I'd ask in case he was a youngster and maybe could have got away with just  tacking. But yep - my girl was 2 years old when she needed doing too. The ironic thing is she'd never needed tacking even as a puppy.

That's really useful. I hope your girl is doing well.  I hate the thought of him under the knife, even though it is a simple procedure - still he must be in pain and that's not fair!

My cocker had entropian as a pup and one eye was ok after the first op, the second eye needed three goes to get a good result.

The recovery time is very very short, but stitches stay in for about 10 days.  He did NOT need someone to be with him all the time as he was not at all troubled by the stitches and didn't have buster collar on. 

He recovered from the anaesthetic overnight and was back to normal in no time at all.  The discomfort of the eyelashes on the eye must be very sore and relieved almost instantly by the operation.

It has been some weeks since your original post on this subject and you really should get this sorted as a priority.  Your dogs sight is at risk as he could develop an ulcer on his eye due to the rubbing.

can you tell ther eyes have been operated on i mean are the eyes shaved if so how long till the eyes are back to normal i mean so you cant tell an operation even took place

You can hardly tell from the outset that anything has been done.  The stitches are very very fine and wispy and just look like longer eyelashes.  They only shave the smallest possible area and not down to the skin, so there's nothing to worry about at all.

Its us that worry about these things, your dog won't be concerned at all.

I have had a bit of time persuading my husband that it is necessary as we are anxious about having our Ben operated on.  But thankyou for the ticking off - you are right and he now agrees.  I will go to see the vet on Monday.

It's easy for me to "tick you off" (oops :-() as I have the benefit of hindsight, having been through it three times! 

I can promise you it is nothing to worry about.  I know that I wouldn't like to have a very sore eye for even a few mins, let alone a long period of time.

My Shar Pei had both eyes done when he was around 2 yrs old and it was a great success.  It healed very quickly and I think his eyes were as good as new in 10 days.  He is currently recovering from Ear canal resection in both ears which seems a lot nastier (and smellier) than the eye surgery.  Good luck.

Just thought I'd like to let you know that Ben had been misdiagnosed and has actually got blocked tear ducts - Good job I got him checked over just before his op!

Anyways he doesn't need an op - though she did say to get it checked out if his eyes get really bad or if he has another op.  Otherwise I just have to put drops in his eyes twice daily.  I am very relieved.

Wow, that must be incredibly painful.  I wouldn't want dry eyes.

Just keep a close eye on him!!
