Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 8 WEEK PUPS, how much food?
- By TownHead [gb] Date 30.09.05 18:35 UTC
I have a litter of eleven pups that I have just finished weaning off their mother's milk. I now feed them two solid meals a day and two lamb's milk meals a day, one of those with weetabix (they have been on lambs milk from week 1).
I am concerned about how I am feeding the litter as nowhere i read concurs an exact amount to feed or what to feed. Also over the last day or two the puppies faeces have started to become more fluid (diarreoha?).
They have been wormed and are very active and happy pups.  Should I continue feeding the litter With lambs milk like this? Thanks!

Hi i give mine 5 meals a day by the time they are 5 weeks old. sorry did not read the whole mesage , it could be the worrer going through the puppies, if you are worried stop the milk for a bit and keep your eye on them .You did not say what you used to worm them with or when you last wormed them, i hope this helps a bit regards debbie .

Four meals a day is perfectly fine, but i'd rather feed them goats milk rather than lamb milk.  I agree with the first post and stop the milk just give water and solids and see how they go from there, i'd also add a little dry toast to bind them if their pups are abit runny.

There's no reason to be feeding them lambs milk or weetabix!!  The diahorrea is almost certainly due to that, imo.

Weetabix contains wheat, which has causes digestive problems in many dogs, not just puppies.  It also contains salt and sugar.  Why would you want to feed your pups on it???  I'm just not sure what nutrients you think they're getting from it at a time when they need protein (meat) more than cereals... If you have to give milk, like the previous poster said, give goat's milk, not lamb's milk.  However, there's no need to give any milk if the dam is still letting the pups suckle a bit.

Why don't you give them 4 small meals a day of mashed up puppy food?  If you're feeding dry, you can soak it in water till soft....

Pups don't need milk once their Mother stops feeding them.  Cereal is sometimes used in the very early stages of weaning, before meat but by 6 weeks, they need 4 decent meals a day, either raw feeding or a good quality complete food.

I agree with the others. Mine are on 4 meals of Nutro complete a day, they get NOTHING else and just water to drink, unless of course Mum wants to give them a little drink ;-) I started weaning at about 22 days and they are almost 7 weeks old and not one of them has ever had runny poo;-) I just soak the puppy food with some cooled boiled water and mash it up at the beginning, now I still add a little water but not as much.

Thanks so much! Will start on the solids only tonight, but let mum offer any milk if she wants. Thank you all again for the very quick replies!
