I've been going to shows and showing my dog for a little while and i've been fascinated by affixes and how they came about for the breeders. Personnally i don't have one and will probably never need one but i still am curious about them. This is why i'm asking how did you find your affix and how long did it take you to decide ?

LOL I just spelt a word phonetically & it took me about 30 seconds ! It took the KC a lot longer to approve it !

Our affix is the name of our first Aussie - Thor - and also the old, norse name for where we live!
Margot - Thorsoak :D :D
We tried for our surnames, using reverse of Herbert, TREB, and the beginning of Brechin,BRECH for TREBRECH but was refused as I believe the KC don't like affixes fom owners names. They choose our last on the list SASDAX, SAS for the Scottish Ambulance Service that we work for and DAX for Dachshund.

A few people in my breed have made up words from their favourite breeds and so have I -Goldmali. Although that was actually my 3rd choice, didn't get my first or second. In my cats it is a combination of two names of my foundation queens, and in hamsters it is the name of my first breeding female. (Yep I've got a KC affix, a GCCF prefix and a BHA hamstery name LOL!)

I chose my kennel name to go with the character of my dogs. I wanted something that sounded oriental and brave and settled on Tiamat a she dragon who was bold and unafraid. Then I discoverd she ate her own chilren and her lover so I thought I had better soften it a bit. I am now 'Tiamastae', still oriental brave and loyal just like my pooches. As it is a made up word it got accepted within days but I am still waiting to see if any objections are going to be raised within the publishing period.
Mine came from the Hindu for black (kala) and tiger (bagh). As my breed are also known as black tigers, and my husband's father and grandfather were born in India (from Scottish ancestors) we went with that.
Herbiedax, I see you mentioned Brechin. Is there any reason? It's just that I live about 6/7 miles outside Brechin, so thought we could be 'neighbours' :)
Hi LindyLou,
Brechin is my partners surname, born and bred Aberdonian. Our only connection with Brechin was the car we bought from Mackies in 1998 LOL!!!
By the way , if you are close can you find out if they do a Brechin tartan yet :-) :-)

Yep and I used to keep a Rabbitry.

I wanted the same name as our website, half my name 'Lucy' and half my OH's 'Stephen', which would have been Luphen. But that was rejected, so I stuck 'ex' on the end and they accepted it as 'Luphenex'. MM, I once had 2 pedigree winter white Russians, but never got round to investigating hamster shows alas. Other that that it was bog standard pet shop Syrians, which I occasionally bred. I had a line of about 8 generations before I had to give up because the dogs were taking over my life

Something cold and unusual ...but since we used the Ice part of our affix, loads of people came along and used it ;) :D Good to be a trendsetter though :D

Funny that as I made mine out of half my name and my oldest bitches so BARB from Barbara, and ELKA = BARBELKA. since then though there have been at least two other affixes with ELKA at the end :D and a very famous American one that predates mine by a long stretch :D

No, not us. If you google Vantoak you'll find lots of listings

Mine is part of the name from one of our girls and good old Cumbrian slang for home

Maybe my mum could of done one from our first Spanish Water Dogs name Dilita and her name Doreen, perhaps on the other hand it's better that she didn't :d
Mine is my first inital and maiden name GLOW and then I added star on the end as I couldn't think of anything else LOL!
While we are on the subject of affixes has anyone had any problems with the KC and your annual maintenance? I sent away my litter registration at approx 4 1/2 weeks. On Monday I recieved a litter from the KC stating there was a problem as I hadn't paid my maintenance fee!!!! I phoned them and they said that I hadn't paid it for 2004 (I orginally thought they meant 2005 which isn't even due yet)
Anyway I knew I had paid it but they were saying I couldn't register my litter in my Affix and I would need to re-apply for it @ £70 and they couldn't guarantee I would even get it back :-( unless I could find proof I'd paid it.
I knew I'd paid it so had to go back to statements for 2004 and I found the payment! They then said it would take 10-14 days to process the reg even though it wasn't my fault and they had already had the paperwork for over 2 weeks. I then checked my email and I had also saved the receipt as I had paid it online. Phoned back and strangely enough they had found the missing payment - almost a year later!!! I still haven't received the reg's yet which I am really angry about as none of this has been my fault :-(

TRUNORTH, because that's where I am, in Northumberland.
It has always mildly irritated me when people think that Birmingham is in the North. It takes me 4 hours to get to Crufts for Pete's sake, and no we are not still using chariots up here. :D
Dawn R.
It has taken 3 years, and several phone calls, for the Kennel Club to take my payment by Direct Debit. I noticed that the money hadn't come out of my account 3 years ago. They said it had been paid, but it hadn't. They eventually agreed that it hadn't and I had to send payment throught he post. Next year, same thing, no DD. Another phone call and they were puzzled as, yet again, it said payment had been received. This year, SUCCESS! Payment was taken out today!!!!
I'd query it. If your bank says it is waiting for the KC to take the money out, then I would say it was the KC's fault, not yours, and they SHOULD just let you make your annual payment. In fact, when I think on it, my ex didn't pay for 2 years, but didn't have to pay the full payment again when he renewed it.
I don't pay mine by DD I pay it when the letter comes in but like you this really upset me as I was trying to register my first litter and I thought I'd lost my affix through no fault of my own.
I made the mistake of getting an affix before I got 'Madams' hips scored 58- seems such a waste now as I do not know when I be able to use it. It was made up of the first letters of each of our family in order of age 'ASDRA' then a shortened surname 'lridge'. Will keep it for now just in case, but it was the last of the 6 we sent in.

affix maintenence is due on 1st July each year.
Mine isn't due in July it's due 12 months from the day it was granted.

Just out of interest, I wonder when that was changed? When I got mine you paid a proportion of the annual fee to take you up to July 1st, when the full 12 month fee was payable.
I dont know when I pay mine, I just get a bill through and then pay it. I cant remember when, although I have a feeling that it is at the beginning of the year.
My affix is HARLISTREAM. It is because my first Flatcoat was called Harley and he is a bugger when he spots water, he adores it!! hence the name.
Rachel
I'm not sure Jeangenie, I know my Affix was granted 1st October 2003 and I get a reminder about 6 weeks before it's due. Didn't get one this year did I after all the confusion, good job I was registering a litter or I might have forgotton :-( as it was they were telling me I'd lost it. Good job I had proof I had paid the maintenance is all I can say ;-)
Hello all,
I've just applied for mine today - hopefully I'll get it, I checked in the book and the lady from the KC said no-one had asked for it so fingers crossed!
My husband and I were on holiday and in a Japanese restaurant when I told him that I wanted to apply for an affix. Just as I said it, the waiter plonked down a bottle of japanese beer in front of us. It was called 'Kirin' beer, the Kirin was supposed to be a mythalogical beast that brought good luck and good health to people, I thought 'bingo' that's what I want to call my affix, 'Kirinsway'. Silly story but there you go.
Ali :)

My affix is the Greek for the god of mischeif, it fits my dogs pretty well.
