Microchips, tattoos?

Why can't people just be honest?
- By Goldmali Date 30.09.05 11:34 UTC
I've always had tattoos and/or microchips checked at the time of x-ray. The simple answer really would be to make it MANDATORY. In fact it is extremely stupid that it isn't already! Certainly at home in Sweden you cannot get a dog hip scored unless it is permanently identifiable via either tattoo or microchip -if it isn't done, the vet does it at the time of the x-ray. In cats (UK) when we scan or DNA test certain breeds for a genetic kidney disease we MUST have the cats microchipped so that the resulting paperwork can never be susbtituted. If UK vets can get into the habit of always checking microchips for tested cats, surely the step  to always check for identification in hip scored dogs wouldnt be a big one......

Tattooing is one way & my X ray vet has a very good memory for dogs I know it was done by a now banned by the KC GSD person but they were caught

When I had my imported GSDs X rayed the tattoo numbers were put on the plates as were my BCs

I know in Germany the use the Tattoo & DNA tests for ID

The same of course for eye sight/heart/shm testing especially in breeds with bad problems.

Well all mine ahve had theri tattoo numbers and or Microchip numbers put on teh x-rays so no way could they be substituted and I know they ask for these at eye testing also.

They should make confirming ID mandatory.

I'm not surprised especially in a breed where the colours can be the same!  This is where the system falls down.

At least those of us who care about our breed know that we are doing the right thing!

They've never asked for the chip no. of my dogs when I've had them eye tested or hipscored!

BLUE, CHIP NUMBER WAS BUT ON THE HIP SCORE FORM AND THAT WAS IN MAY 2005

just been reading about the hip score fiasco and your quite right the kennel club do know whats going on but choose not to police it although they make a big fuss about advising prospective puppy owners to buy pups from hip scored parents ..... in my mind until they do something about stamping out the abuse that some breeders make from the system the breed mean score is worth absolutely nothing ..... they should only allow dogs with some form of identity be it chip tattoo or dna to be allowed into the bva schemes this would stamp out the unscrupulous breeders from submitting dogs they know will have bad hip scores it will also make the breed mean scores truer than they are now

Well my dogs chips have ben checked before they have had their eye tests and the chip numbers and tattoo numbers have been printed onto their X-rays.
