I have had blood-shot, watering eyes for more than 3 weeks and I have been told by the Dr. that it is viral conjunctivitis and that "nothing can be done for it as viruses have to just run the course". He gave me antibiotic eye drops in case a bacterial infection 'kicked in' but he said that the drops won't clear the virus. I am getting fed up with it now and I am wondering if any of you have had it and if so, can you recommend anything to help it?
i've not heard of viral .... infectious gives greeny gunky sticky eyes ( yukky ) highly contagious or allergic which tends to be more watery swollen eyes..
sounds to me like it might be allergy to something, if so piriton or aller-eze or something similar ( anti histamines) will help ease symptoms.
i have had both kinds, though thankfully not the yukky infected one for years now :)
Thanks for the reply Janeandkai. No, it is not an allergy. My eyes aren't itching or painful, just blood red and watering!! I look a sight I can tell you!!! The bacterial conjunctivitis although painful is apparently easier to clear up by using antibiotic eye drops!!
i have just done a search... amazing what you learn... your right no known treatment, only thing they say is its highly contagious ( dont share towels etc) and likely cause is the common cold! although if your eyes dry up ( painfully dry) there is a lubricant you could use (lacri-lube)
Oh poor you :( looks like you'll just have to ride it out, curl up on the sofa with abox of choccys and a large glass of something
{{{{{hugs}}}} hope you feel better soon
Hee-hee...............the chocs and wine have done no good so far (Well..not for the eyes anyway!! :) ) But I think I'll keep on with that treatment as you have recommended it :)....thanks!
LOL your welcome hic!! ;) :D

You poor thing, any kind of conjunctivitis is horrible to have :(
One thing I swear by for soothing conjuctivitis is cold tea (no milk ;) ) with salt in it. The tannins in the tea make it very soothing and the salt helps soothe as well.
Thanks Dill. It is funny you should recommend the cold tea treatment because yesterday I started rinsing my eyes in cold tea after remembering our old Vet from about 30 years ago telling me to try it on our first Collie who had an eye infection. I thought 'If it is good enough for my dog, it is good enough for me' :) It is soothing.......but I still look like a red-eyed monster!! :)

My nan suffered for years with similar symptoms
it turned out in the end that she had a problem with
her lower eyelid being inturned im (not saying thats
whats wrong with you ) but she was having treatment
for conjunctivitis at first
Apparently, it is is 'good' sign to the Dr. if both eyes are affected!!!
