Topic Dog Boards / General / HELP!! Blues hurt his leg!!
- By Blues mum Date 29.09.05 16:35 UTC
Could someone please give me some advise as what to do? Blues gone running through the babygate and wacked his side on the gate as his gone through and was crying like mad for some time afterwards, I managed to calm him down and settle him, at this point he was lying on his good side, when he went through the gate it looked to me as though it was his side/shoulder that his hurt, but as i was testing his joints its his front leg that he cryed when i moved it - i was very gentle.
He then got up to go to his bed and cryed and limped all the way, his on there now and hasnt moved since, his asleep now by the way. He was very shocked and shaky. Ive phoned the vet and explained, the receptionist said to bring him up in my car, but theres no way i can lift a 5 month old Dane and theres no way im going to put any strain/pressure on his leg! So i asked her if the vet could come round asap, im waiting for a phone call now.
I wanted to know if to let him get up and move if he wants to or to keep him where he is until his seen to as i dont know exactly what his done, whether his just bruised his leg or sprained it, i dout its broke as i could move it about a bit and he was ok with that, it might even be his shoulder for all i know! :( :( :( Im very upset and worried! The receptionist said that it would be cheaper for me to take him up, but i said i dont care what it costs, i dont want to put him through any more pain!

Aw Blue bless him & you, if i'm being honest i'd probably do the same, hang in there & let us know how it goes

I will do, im still waiting for a phone call, vets eh! I know surgery closes today at 6.30 so it will probably be after then that he will get seen too, if i had one of those big trolleys like you get in B&Q id run him into town now! At least his asleep and resting, just hope he dont forget and go to get up, i know when the vet comes round shes going to make him cry! :( But then i suppose they need to know where his pain is dont they?!

The problem is, if he needs any treatment, then he'll have to be taken to the surgery anyway for it to be done, which is why they would want you to take him in.......

That depends on whether they do it at that surgery - with my old vets the local one was just a consultation room... so I would have to take Willis in the car to the main office....

Leave him where he is until the vet sees him. Hope he's OK - Danes can be babies - but its an important time for him with his bones growing so better to be checked out.

Sorry to hear about Blue.

It sounds like he has bruised it and it gave him a bit of a shock.  If he was in great pain I doubt if he would have fallen asleep.  If he has sprained something you should see a joint beginning to swell.  They don't usually sprain a joint by bashing into something.

I think Arnica is good for bruising, I don't know the dosage I am afraid, perhaps someone else can help you with it.

Good Luck

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks, ive put a little bandage on where i think his done the damage to give him a bit of support! Just had a phone call, vets going to be round in 15 mins!! Il update as soon as!

Ok, vets been and she thinks his just badly bruised his leg, she said to have him rest tonight and see how he is in the morning, if his no better then shes going to have him in for an xray, if he is walking on it better but still in pain then to get him down there anyway for some painkiller, shes already give him a dose tonight. His been out to do a wee and didnt stop him having a sniff round, also hasnt taken away his appetite! So at the mo, blue is getting treated like a king and i have a   sneeky feeling he might just play on that for a few more days!! I do hope that his alot better by tommorow after his had a good nights rest :)

Glad it doesn't look too serious.

I have a feeling he might be getting a better nights sleep then you will.  ;)

Oh i hope he's ok but boy danes are such bliddy babies!
If a breed had a low pain threshold then its them!

Herman cried like a baby and i was panic striken when he was having a scrap with Dolly and hurt his leg i babied the poor mite and oh he loved it! 10secs later he walked away limp free

Ive had to take little Blue to the vets this morning as he is no better on his leg and still in pain, ive had to leave him there as his having xrays done :( I feel really crap at the mo, didnt want to leave him there, ive got to phone up at half one and then pick him up at half 3. This was a different vet i saw this time and she seems to think its his shoulder more than his actual leg.

I hope he is feeling better soon. Its heartbreaking to see them in pain and discomfort.
My thoughts are with you.

Thanks Sarah :) Not long got back from vets, all his xrays came back fine, so im really pleased about that! His got some painkillers and his to rest as much as he can, no walks etc. Im so relieved ive got him back home, although he`s still limping about and in pain still, he wont leave my side so ive dragged his bed in the frontroom so his with everyone and can see all whats going on. Ive tried him with some food but his not interested, maybe he might want a little bit later on tonight as his not eaten all day as to having the xrays and that. Got to go back in a weeks time for a checkup, i hope his back to his usual bad boy self soon! :)

My baby came into heat this week and didn't touch her food and was a complete wimp, but next day, back to to good old self that I love so much. My hubby gets out of walking her for the next 3 weeks, think I got the short end of the straw there.... I still have to do the morning shift with Sam..

How about pampering blue with some boiled chicken or something like that. I used to do that with Barnie when he was under the weather and he loved it, at least I knew he ate something.
