Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Intermittent toilet training from pup

We've had our pup three weeks now (11 weeks old) and he has settled in very well (well apart from the clothes biting but that is another story).

One thing we are having a problem with is toilet training. He lives in the kitchen and is generally good during the day with few accidents as he is let out on a regular basis. At night he is even better with only one accident per night and last night not even an accident (over 6 hours - I was VERY pleased). However, the problem comes in the evening when we let him in the lounge. Even if we have taken him out 15 minutes before he will pretty much always have at least one accident per night and not always in the same place (although he does have a particular penchant for the rug!). We are doing all the right things (praising him outside when he does it and try to distract him when he does it inside and get him to the back door)

Any ideas how we can get him out of this??

are you actually watching him when he is in the lounge?
do you spot the tell tale signs that hes about to pee? circling and sniffing the ground just before legs sqat down abit...
You probably do do the above, so the only think i could say is carry on, as soon as you see it about to happen, whisk them outside and praise when they've been.

One thing i would add is make sure the area he's pee'd on is cleaned up thoroughly as any slight trace of pee left will just encourage him to do it again in the same place. bio washing powder i believe is the best thing to clean up accidents, and someone else suggested wiping the area over after with white vinegar.

He's still only a baby and not yet got full control over his bladder, but your off to a good start just carry on :D

Well I think it could be one of 2 things. Either it is still a bit too exciting and he cannot control him slef in the circumstances OR he is doing it because he knows that as soon as he has a pee you get down on the floor with him to clean it up. Believe it or not I had a dog that did this, normally when I was washing up, cos he wanted me to play with him. It took me ages to catch on :)

Bluebell - how did you resolve it??

Once I learned to ignore it he was not getting his reward of me bending down to clear it up and it very quickly stopped - They are not silly, infact I think he is way too smart for his own good ;)

I know the feeling, I think my FCR pup is waaay to smart for his own good!
