Please can someone help!  I'm doing this for a friend who has a English Springer Spaniel!  Over the past year Havey has become extremly protective of my collegues wife to the extent he'll bite anyone that goes near her.  They have tried many training methods but nothing seems to be stopping this!  He doesn't want to have him destroyed but he can't put his children at risk as he has already drew blood.  I am unsure of what to do or how to help or advise my collegue and was hoping someone with more knowledge of these things could help with this situation or with rehoming him.

I would suggest they get in touch with a behaviourist who will come to the home and observe.
also the breeder of the ESP for advise..

Have you consulted a vet? It may be wise to rule out any health problems to start with.
