Topic Dog Boards / General / Breeder docks own puppies tails???
- By betty_boo [gb] Date 28.09.05 19:21 UTC
Went to view a puppy over the weekend I had contacted the seller through this website!!

But was a little concerned to learn the breeder docks the puppies tails themselves is this common for a breeder to dock a puppy's tail or is it something best left to a vet??

Any advice would be grateful thanks

|Unless the breeder is also a vet I think it is (illegal, that is)

Thanks for the quick response from you both.

Did not realize it was an illegal action this breeder was carrying out but did think (DIY) was not a very humane way to dock a puppy's tail!!

Actually breeders had always docked their won tails or ahd them done by other expereinced breeders, in the majority of cases doing a far better kob of it than a vet.  It is ilegal though since the change in the law.

Interestingly enough it is quite legal for farmers to do similar things to farm animals themselves without anasthetic on animals who have a fully developed nervous system at the time, for example castrating lambs.

Actually experienced breeders often do a better, quicker, cleaner job of it than the vet.

As Brainless says, farmers can legally dock and castrate their own livestock without anaesthetic, at an age when they're far more developed.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal now. But saying that many breeders did and still do it. I had a friend who used to breed rotties and they did their own pups tails and some of their friend's pups too. I won't say how it was done in case I give people stupid ideas, but lets just say nothing was chopped off and stitched up like the vets often do it, the puppies were never distressed in any way and there was absolutely no medical problems caused by the procedure.

Nowadays only vets are allowed to dock puppies' tails. If the breeder isn't also a vet, then yes, it's illegal.
