hiya can someone give me some info i now its not the done thing but a friend of mine has a cocker cross and the other day the neighbours male staffy got to her in the back garden she was in season and the dogs were tied back to back before my friend realised she has taken the bitch to the vets and he has said bring her back in a couple of wks my friend isnt sure what to do she has just had a baby herself and doesnt feel she can look after pups aswell if the bitch is pregnant can the bitch have a termination and if so is there any time limit any help and advice will be much appreciated thxs

The vet can give her the 'morning after' injections (I believe they're done at 2 and 4 days post-mating). Alternatively the vet can spay her now - not ideal during a season, but better than a litter of unwanted puppies.

I agree JG, that's what the vet should be doing, not sending her away for 2 weeks!!

Maybe that's when he intends to spay her, when her season's finished, but if so he should have made that clear to the owner!

There is actually a injection which can be done up to 42 days post mating and is actually safer than the one done on day 3 and 5 in the respect that it is less likely to give the bitch a pyrometra.  Perhaps the vet wants to check the bitch is actually pregnant before interfering with nature.

I work in a vets and the injection can be given up to 45 day later. It is best to leave it till after the season because if the bitch is caught again whilst in season it can't be given again.

What is it's name as it would seem that most vets are still giveing the old ones that are given within days of a mismating.

I think it is a relatively new product.  Well my friend who is a vet told me about it said it was.  She had to get the book out and read the instructions as she had only used it once on a lab who was accidently mated and the owners didnt find out until around day 35.  Next time I see her will find out the name.  It can be given from the following day of the mating.  I know with the other one there is a higher risk of pyrometra which is why the other one seemed so much better option - although she did point out that in the time she had used the other one she had never had a dog have one as a result.

The only thing I find a bit 'icky' about an injection 45 days after mating is firstly the bitches body will have acclimatised itself for an impending pregnancy and whelping only to have the hormones all mixed up on termination.  Secondly, those foetuses would be a decent size by then (Actual whelping is approx 63 days) so what happens to their bodies?

Bitches go through the same hormonal changes whether they become pregnant or not, sometime lat in false preganancy these hormones reduce quickly whereas in the pregannant bith they do not and she goes on to give birth and lactate. 

So it shouldn't be noticed by the bitch that hey she was pregnant and then she wasn't, and in fact bitches that did get pregnant can havew absorbed pups up to 6 weeks in whelp.

I saw an advert in the dog papers for this product a couple of years agao, but can't remember the name.  This is why I was surprosed to find that few vets seemed to be clued up on it, and that most were still using the old sometimes ineffective drugs judging by the cases of missalliance I have heard about.  My freinds bitch who was born after one of these is several years old, and the advert had been around before that.

Nobody is suggesting waiting until 45 days but in my vets opinion it is better to wait until 21 days post mating to check the bitch is actually pregnant before interferring and giving a injection which although it says it has no side affects who knows?  It might be for example that the owners hadnt found out about a mating if somebody had kept quiet or the dogs did genuinely do it without anyone knowing if for example the dog was having a silent season.  It is a bit like when a woman has to have a termination at the later stages nobody would do it willingly.  I did ask the vet what happened with the bodies and according to her they are reabsorbed into the bitches system.  Every system has pros and cons.
