So far my little fury son has learned come, sit, stay, off, heel, paw and roll over. I'm running out of ideas what to teach him next. Can you think of any good tricks for my Sheltland Sheepdog puppy? I enjoy training him so much and he seems to enjoy it a lot too. Or at least the treats he gets for his troubles. :D
Down, speak, quiet, fetch, high five, bow, wave, beg and dance (only a tiny bit if your pup is very young), find... keys, slippers, toy, ball, teddy etc.

I found 'Dog Tricks for Dummies' a great trick book. There are loads in there and it shows you how to do each step by step. Here's the link in amazon.

Stand, Up (on his back legs), Walk Back, different paws. Down, and Emergency Down. I saw a Sheltie at a companion show trained to fetch things and put them away in boxes!

BANG , crawl , get tissue (awsome when they don't rip it) , hold and follow (i get them to hold the water bucket and bring it around the house)

weave through your legs while walking forwards and backwards
heelwork walking backwards
reverse through your legs and do a finish
play dead .....so funny Ellie loves to do that one and it is so easy!!

Any ideas on how to get them to bark? Mine prefers to whine and only barks at people walking past the house. She seems too distracted at those times to connect her barking with me saying speak - lol
we've sort of got our sheltie to speak but then its quite easy to make him bark by just sounding excited - he barks if you ask him if he wants his "bakers" or if he wants to go in the car etc so we said speak a lot then and now we say speak in the same tone as bakers or car - but then again he doesnt do it all the time when you tell him too
I taught my Sheltie to "speak" really easily. He is clicker trained, so he knows that when I click, it means he's done something right. I know what things make him bark playfully, like lunging at him, or taunting him with a cookie, so whenever he would bark, I would click and treat. Then start pairing the action with a command like "speak". It's quite easy for vocal breeds like Shelties to teach speak. I couldn't get my Golden to bark if I gave her all the treats in the world, but the Shelties are much easier.
To the original poster, you can also teach him to roll over, sit pretty, crawl and find the treat (put the treat in one hand, and they sniff the hands then paw whichever one has the treat in it). Some may have been mentioned before, but these are some that I taught my Sheltie boys. And shelties are so quick and so intelligent, they are energetic learners who learn quickly.

Hi Becks,
I hope you like it too. I've seen quite a few trick books, but this one is the best one by far. Let us know how you get on. I taught my great dane to 'ask'/'be a bear' and it took him ages to learn to keep his balance - it was so funny watching him :-)
All the best,
Patty

mine do (in addition to some of the stuff up there)..
SHOUT, (bark loudly), scary (growl softly), shut the door, toys in the toy box, and we are working on rubbish in the bin.
Rocky also does spin and rewind (spin round one way, then the other), high five left and right, and high ten. im going to get him a kids hula hoop to jump through as well.
Em
I've got a heelwork to music book and am teaching mine some of the things out of that.
I've also taught them, Speak, Dead, Roll over, Walk backwards. I tried to get Ollie on his back legs but he a big dopey lump and cant hold himself up. Hope you have fun training you little one some new tricks :)
