Help, I am getting a new pup (male) in 4 weeks time, I have spent all weekend thinking of a name, any ideas? Deliberately not giving breed of pup because I don't want a name reflecting this, i.e sibe with arctic sounding name, or poodle with french name etc. Would like an unusal name that relates to something like maybe famous person or place etc. any ideas on how any of you chose your babies names much appreciated.

Changed my second dogs name to Beano. Only because my 8 year old at the time loves that Beano and was reading it when we were trying to think of names, he suggested it!!!!!! BUT everyone thinks it is the perfect name for him :) :) :)
Gemma was just a name i liked lol
Lea :)

Why not look at a baby names book or website. There are websites for human baby names, human baby names categorised into nationalities and popular dog names categorised into male or female. Just type "dog names" into google and lots come up. Good luck with your new pup.

Our first dog was Pepper, simply because she was all black and some peppercorns are black :D
Our current dog is Spice because.....
"Pepper and Spice and all things nice" ( I know it should be Sugar and Spice but hey it works for us :D
Also as someone on here mentioned "Everyone needs a little Spice in their Life!" how true ;)
Jacqueline :)

Our dog is named after a famous person. The kids named her after a famous heiress but the snob in me tells people that she is named after a Shakespeare character in Romeo and Juliet :D What's my dog's name?

Can't remember any female names from R&J except Juliet herself - all those English lesson were totally wasted! :-D
Isn't there a girl called Rosaline (or something like that?) or am I getting mixed up with another play?

I called the boy that I kept from my last litter 'Milor' because my French grandmother had a big black dog with this name and snuggling up to him is one of my earliest memories - I always looked forward so much to our holidays with 'granmere' so that I would be able to play with Milor - I remember being devastated when we went one year and he had died :(

Hi my first dog was called sphinx yes you guessed it egypt but only that he was a fabulous black n tan Afghan
then when we got our first boxer he was already called oscar so we didnt change that. our first bitch was called Sassie after th cat in the film Homeward bound, sons choice of name as she was his 11th b/day present.
now we have a benson he is sassie,s son
then theirs daisie dont know why. then we have a Daisie cant think where her name came from and finally little Solo he got called that purely because he was the last puppy in daisies litter that we decided to keep and after all the other pups went to their new owners he was all alone, hence solo.

Well I have Cyan as shes blue and white
Wish because she was what I had wished for
Fizz is because her kennel name is a wind ok abit tenuous I know but it works for us lol
Satin from a can of ladies shave foam lol
Willow just liked it
Demi she came with the name

My Cav boy is Henry because we wanted something regal but not Charlie - too obvious! My Yankee is George partly because it could be for George Washington! Both of them when we went to pick out a puppy having decided on the name, these two puppies just looked like a Henry and a George! My new puppy is Ellie because her breeder was going to register her as Elanor (from Lord of the Rings, her father is Bilbo!) and by the time we heard that had been refused the name had stuck! :-)
Well dougal was named after father ted, not the magic roundabout like people think, and we named him after that cause he is a bit clumsy and not really that bright bless him!!! :D just like dougal on father ted. But his nickname is treacle cause he is thick and sweet!! :D

Hi,
We are getting our pup soon, we have decided on Paddy, named after 'Max and Paddy's Road to No Where' (Telly program with Peter Kay - hubbie is a big fan!!) We weren't keen on Peter for a dog, or Max, too many dog's called Max, but Paddy kind of fits!
Some other ideas we had were Ozzy, JayJay (as in the Bolton Wonderers Player - again hubbie is a big fan!!), and Mercury (Freddie Murcury, we are both fans of his!!)
Good luck with your pup :D

LOL Kaycee is the phonetic spelling of KC as he is a CKCS
Joedee is part of my nickname & my friend his co-owners name
Loukar is the phonetic spelling of Luca the sexy doctor in ER
& Roy is Roy 'cos his Breeder is called Roy, His dad is called Roy & I always wanted to call a dog Roy but it never seemed the right name. Mind you he is also called the Pupster :D

I called mine...
Asa...because it means 'new start' and he was my new start into the world of showing
Frankie....short for Frankinsteins monster cos thats what his breeder called him!!!!
Archer
We've got bordercollie/lab called Ellie Girl- not sure why but she just is although OH says she's Ellie after 'ELLAND ROAD' (she isn't) - and English CS called Ruby Tuesday. I chose Ruby and no-one else liked it- ugh.. Ruby Wax etc..-and we sort of added the tuesday bit cos she was born on a tues. We often play The Rolling Stones song to her and she seems to enjoy a sing-a-long.
We're hoping to get a whippet in the spring and she's (apparently according to my dear husband) going to be called Mazy Dribble after a FOOTBALLING MANOEUVRE!!....
We'll See!
My boys called jester cos hes such a clown.
Jonelle

All mine have Spanish names as they're a Spanish breed, don't get many with the same name though :d

Hooray, another Queen fan!!! Another thing I am tending to do is call my dogs something ending in -ie or -y - even George is usually called Georgie!

My bitch is called Mallory after the book Mallory Towers, and Luke just because I liked it, his name when I got him was Buster, didn't like that for a Dane.
Rufus as in Rufus Wainright and Dylan as in Bob Dylan - The cat is called Ringo as that was his name when we got him which started me off with the song writers / singers theme.
Our next dog (which if I get my way will be a wirehaired Vizsla !) will be Ozzy - as in Ozzy Osbourne of course.
And our old Springer had his named changed from Max (sounded too much like a sanitary towel to me) to Forrest simply because we had just watched Forrest Gump and the springer really was a Forrest Gump :)

Willis was always going to be Willis - even before I chose him (I had 3 potential Willis's in the litter at one point :D )
We are hoping to get a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in November. He will be a little boy and strangely enough Moonmaiden we have thought of Casey because of KC. LOL. Great name.
When I was growing up we had two dogs. The first one was called Suki. My sister wanted to call it "Polly put the kettle on". My mother decided on Suki for "Suki took it of again". The second dog was called Nada. Whilst on holiday my mother saw a lovely dog and ask the man next door to it what it was called and he said "Nada" meaning he didn't have a name as Nada means "nothing" in Spanish.
my kids named one of our dogs gromit.... big fans of wallace and gromit at the time :D

melster122 you've made me a name for my friend now who wants a Spanish name :d I don't think that she's going to like me!

My dog is called Paris - I think Paris in Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet might have been spelt double 'r' but the kids named her after Paris Hilton the American Heiress who is featured quite a lot on MTV (I think, not sure, not been interested enough to watch it). Anyway I don't know if this is a compliment to our dog or insult to Paris Hilton :D (meow meow) but certainly doesn't reflect our financial status!

My recent addition is called Leela. When the breeder put pics of the litter on the net she put different coloured ribbons round the pups necks so that people could tell which was which and the one I liked was purple girl. Leela (actually spelt Lila) is Swedish for purple. I did actually book a Pharaoh from Australia years ago and he was gonna be called Afsaph (another f***inf smart arsed pharaoh hound) :D
Debs

Our big crossbreed boy is Shay...like Che Guevara but I didn't want to spell it the same way. Now most people thing we named him after the Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Givern (I think that's his name). His nickname is Roo and that is most often what he is called in the house. The pup is Lola simply because that is the name I had picked out years ago for my first girlie dog. Her nickname is Bear because she's a Newfie and everyone we meet says she looks just like a little bear cub.
my first two dachshunds are called ben and wilma, not named by us. wilma has just had a litter of 3 and my evil children have named them rhubarb abraham, tinkerbell thunderwolf and stretch pixie! i am going to have such fun calling them back when out for walks.

my dog is called jack .... i called him this because he has the same shaped mouth as my dad and his name is jack too ... my dog is a boxer!! :)
Our boxer is called Glazby after Paul Glazby who is a hard house DJ. My OH is a music (hard house) fanatic and has over 3000 records at home and his decks take pride of place where I would love to have a lovely dining table one day!!
Paul Glazby is his favourite DJ and so we decided to name "Glazby" after him. :D
Its also quite an unusual name and so quite a conversation starter whenever anyone asks what his name is!! :-)
Oh yes - Glazby is a Boxer!! :D

I currently have RAGGA. She's a Mastiff and everyone kept asking if she bit.
Vinnie after Vinnie Jones. bullmastiff.
Sid after Sid Vicious(JRT) and Saxon the Rottie.
Saxon is a recent rescue and we put a lot of names on pieces of paper and threw them at him. He caught the onoe with Saxon on.
I call him Saxonianbograt.
I have cats called Hiss'n'Spit, Charlie after Charlie Chaplin as he has splayleg and Domino because of his colouring.
Among my ferrets there is a boy called Eugene. We got him while my son was watching Big Brother. He winges like Eugene but is extremely intelligent we can't keep him in a cage he opens them all.
My pony is called Heaven-Leigh (Casteel) after one of the children in a Virginia Andrews book.
I have a Grandaughter called Skye.

We called the Douge de Bordeaux Britney, because my husband has pictures of Britney Spears on his wall. This was my little peace of revenge

Mine are all called after rivers ...Hudson, Delta and Madison :)

My black Lab's name is the reason I got started on this board. Jet is a semi-precious, glossy black stone, that is mined and made into jewellery in Whitby England.
I was trying to think of both a name and a registered name for my blue merle Sheltie boy when I first got him at 3 months. I was looking through my roommate's Aussie magazines, and saw a name I liked, which I used as his registered name and got his call name from. He's "Keepsake's Tangled in Blue" and I call him Tango.
my bitch is called jet.we werent sure wether we was having a boy or a girl so my partner picked jet after the the girl from gladiators.lol. but i said if it was a boy id call it warrior love that name.
also arnie and schmichael are good names bitch had a litter of ten 7weeks ago these are 2 of the names that the new owners will be calling them think there lovely names also
