Hi Em
You'd be best off trying to find some ringcraft classes. Goldens can either be stacked (where you move all four feet into their correct position -frontlegs straight, hind feet slightly back but not far enough back for the dog's back to slope, and if you don't watch out for the front legs being straight under the dog he can end up looking like a rocking horse

it can be very hard to tell when you are doing it, a large mirror is ideal or somebody watching you and helping you) hold a hand under the dog's chin and hold the tail out level with the back, OR they can freestand, same position but you don't hold them, you stand in front of the dog, and ideally the tail should be wagging.
If you go to this website:
http://www.thegoldenretrieverclub.co.uk/ and click on "show news" in the menu you will find LOTS of photos from shows from several years, and there you can see how the dogs are stood.
With Goldens there is also quite a bit of trimming needed before showing; paws, chest, ears, hocks, trousers, tail etc, so you really would be best adviced to get some help from a ringcraft class or perhaps your dog's breeder is best as far as trimming goes.
Good luck! :)
