what is the average hipscore in a german shepherd

As of Jan 05 The mean score (average of all GSDs scored) is 19 and the Mean score (most common score in the breed) is 12.

But don't forget that those figures are likely to be lower than the true averages.
Only a small % of dogs are xrayed, and they are usually ones who are likely to have reasonable results. Once the plates are done they do not HAVE to be submitted for scoring - most vets will advise on a likely result and why pay the extra when you know it is going to be poor?

There are still breeders out there who huff and puff and will tell you they don't hipscore because it is a waste of time as it doesn't guarantee anything (they are partly right but we have to start somewhere if this problem is ever to be reduced); I've even heard some claim that they don't need to score because they've been breeding dogs for years and know their lines have good hips. Errr, so why not get it officially documented? Ho hum..... I wonder!

i am planning on having my bitch scored as i would like to breed from her i have found a stud that has a hip score of 15 do you think this is a ok score(of course is is hemo clear)

I would need to know what the scores were like behind him & that he is an improver for HD(ie he produces better hips than himself & all the bitches he is bred to)I had such a dog he had perfect hips(yes he had a 0:0=0 hips)& of all the puppies he produced(95% of which were scored)all were better than their dams, including some 0:0=0's

Hips are not the be all & end all , but if there are two dogs of equal merit & whose pedigrees are a good match for the bitch then the lower hip scored dog that was an improver would be the one I chose

As Malcolm W says the dog is more than a part of hips !

I had a VERY long conversation with Malcolm W some 15 or so years ago and found him to be a very sensible man with balanced views!!;)
