Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / black pugs!
- By Guest [gb] Date 26.09.05 16:38 UTC
Hi there, i really need someones help!
Im looking at getting a pug pup very soon but i predominantly want a male black pug.
i live in surrey and although there are a few breeders in this area i cannot find one who solely breeds black litters, im not sure if it is even possible to breed just black as i know some litters can be mixed, but i just wondered if any one might be able to supply some contact details of some black breeders, if this is even possible!!

Many thanks.

The Pug Dog Club will probably be able to help you find a reputable breeder that breeds within their code of ethics which would be the first concern before even colour :)

Whilst Isabels reply concerning contacting the Pug Dog  club is certainly very valid, to say clour choice should be secondary in your search for a Pug is not very helpful!  With a breed such as Pugs, who only come in 2 colour variations, most potential owners have a very clear idea which colour they want, and no-one in Pugs will think any the less of you for enquiring about the colour you have your heart set on.  You will find that most breeders concentrate on only one of the colours (although some do both).  I know we have a board member here who has a litter of blacks, perhaps she may be along soon to help.

Gwen,

Forgive me, but I always thought Pugs came in four colours, silver, fawn, apricot and black??   I have seen Silver, Fawn and Black, but haven't seen an Apricot one, shame, they sound gorgeous.

Hi Dill,  The Apricot and Silver shades are variations of Fawn - special colour classes at breed shows are listed for Fawns and Blacks only.  And you are very lucky indeed if you have seen a silver!  This colour is much sort after, but is reliably believed to have died out, although some of the less knowledgable/ethical try to pass "smutty" coated fawn as silver.  Apricot colouration is not too unusual, simply a rather warmer shade of fawn - lots to be seen in the ring.  As the coat colouration in Fawns does not establish until well into puppy hood (and beyond) the vast majority just get registered as Fawn.

I certainly always know what colour I am looking for when I seek a new puppy :) and I don't suggest that others shouldn't either but I think colour is secondary to health and type but that is not to say I think they are mutually exclusive so I can't really see that my comments were at all unhelpful.  As we know from other posts on here, not everybody realises there are other issues out there Labradors, for instance, only come in one more colour but peoples single minded focus on one of them has often led to a disregard to health and temperament issues.  I rather thought the Pug Club would be able to give them details of black pug breeders who, as I say, would be meeting their code of ethics so that seems to me to be not only giving the poster what they were wanting but also what they were needing what could be more helpful than that? :)

<Colour
Silver, apricot, fawn or black. Each clearly defined, to make contrast complete between colour, trace (black line extending from occiput to twist) and mask. Markings clearly defined. Muzzle or mask, ears, moles on cheeks, thumb mark or diamond on forehead and trace as black as possible. >

The mask is such a feature of the breed :) and gives their little faces such character :D :D

LOLOL my cavaliers often have black faces I won't say why tho' Not part of the breed standard tho' My JD has a girl friend who is a fawn pug she throws herself at him everything she sees him & he never complains ;)

Isabel,Perhaps I misinterpreted your original reply, then, or maybe it did not quite convey the message you intended.

I have no idea what message you picked up to be honest :)  I still can't see for the life of me what I said that was unhelpful and with an exclamation mark too!
