Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / when does milk come in

Hi everyone. My bitch had a litter 3 days ago and I still don't think her milk has come in. The pups are sucking well but when I try to express a little milk she is bone dry on all teats. I am getting a little worried because I expected the milk to be plentiful and I am concerned the pups are getting nothing to eat. they certainly don't look fat in the tum area but they are all twitching and not overly noisy. How long have I to wait before I step in with the bottle.
Thanks shannon

Hi shannon,
Can't help I'm afraid but I can sympathise. Going through it myself at the moment. It is HORRIBLE waiting. I was expecting fountains but all I've seen is a smear. I am on 3 days as well. Who will hit the bottle first, us or the pups :D

I should not be too worried if I was you Shannon, new borns need small amounts often. Mothers milk if wonderful stuff, in the early days it is richer so that enough nurishment is given in a smaller amount to tiny stomachs, it is better to judge by the condition of the pups rather than any excess milk coming from the bitch. They sound like they are contented therefore I would take it that they are getting enough. You can check for dehydration by lifting the skin a little further down from the scruff between the shoulders if it sinks straight back they are fine if it stays up in a tent shape they are getting dry, only in that case would I consider suplimenting. Don't forget whatever you give it will not be as good as mothers milk and only the demand of the pups will keep her producing what they need.
