Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Expert advice on breeding pugs wanted!!
- By PugMad [gb] Date 26.09.05 14:57 UTC
Im looking to breed my bitch in then next year or so. So far I've read up on as many aspects of breeding pugs as possible. I'm well aware of the costs involved and have that side of things covered, the time and effort involved with it all is again, no problem. Im looking into breeding from top lines if possible and wish to eventually go into showing as well as breeding.

Obviously all breeders start somewhere and I could do with advice and support to get me on my way! If there are any breeders out there who are willing to help, please feel free to contact me. I'm all ears!

Many thanks, Paula

The best idea is to put the horse before the cart Paula, start from the other direction and show your girl.  Firstly you'll find out if she is good enough to be bred from, and you'll not find a better place to make contact with experienced breeders, who, if you convince them of your good intentions for the breed, will, I'm sure be happy to mentor you through your first litter. :)  Pugs are not an easy breed to whelp and so you need as much help as you can get before putting your bitch at risk.

Thanks for your reply Val.

Unfortunately she had an eye op following a ruptured corneal ulcer. Totally unrelated to genetics, so that put an end to that! Shame really as she has a lovely face, good markings, nice apricot coat too. So I was hoping to use a stud with as good a pedigree as I can get (allowing on wether the breeder wishes to let me use him). From this I am hoping to keep back a bitch to then take to ring classes and go from there.

Thanks again for your reply! :)

Oh dear!! :(  OK, then contact the breed club and find out where their next club show is and the secretary will also be able to tell you where the next general Champ show is (a bit thin at this time of the year!) and go along, see the dogs and meet the breeders.  If the exhibitors see your dedication and see you at a few shows (it doesn't matter that you dogs isn't there - just take some photos of her and the pedigree) and they'll be more likely to help than if you just email or ring.

Pugs are not good mothers they tend to have the pups and leave you to do the rest, its very hard work please think about breeding very carefully before doing it

Hi Paula,

I'm sorry to hear about the eye problem you had with your pug.  I do agree though that showing is important, so I have 2 suggestions for you:

1.  If I were you, I would purchase another bitch from a high quality line and champ parents, preferably.  I would then show her and start with her, probably spaying the bitch with the eye problem.  I can see why, if you had a large breed, you might not want to do this, but imo, it's so much easier with small dogs to have several at a time so I'd just start again.

2.  If you're very reluctant to start again, I'd go to champ shows with your bitch - not enter her, just take her.  I believe you can now enter champ shows with a 'pet' dog and you don't have to leave them in the Not For Competition tent at the entrance.  You just pay a small entrance fee for your pet dog.  If you want to check this, call the Kennel Club.  You can definitely take her to Open shows.  At the show, have a long chat with the pug people about the breed, and if possible try to get a few of them to go over your dog and give you an honest opinion of her strengths and weaknesses (show people will be only too happy to do this - in fact they will be flattered you want their opinion).  Often at champ shows you get judges watching from the side lines - champ judges who will soon be judging the breed in future and are watching a show before theirs.  You could try to get them to look at her too, and explain why.  That way you can get a good idea of her quality without having to show her.

Many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply.

Luvapug, I'm well aware about pug mothers having a tendancy of being less than maternal with their offspring. But I'm prepared to put 100% into doing what ever is neccessary to ensure the best possible chance for the pups. I can see where your concerns are coming from though! :)

Onetwothree, I have considered taking her to shows to get her looked over. I'll have to contact the pug dog club to see about dates for shows in and around my county. And as for buying another bitch, I was planning on buying a show quality black bitch from one of the top breeders in the next year or two. Then hopefully start out showing with her. All very exciting! :D

Many thanks again for everyones helpful and caring opinions, Paula

Hi Pugmad,  just to clarify a couple of points from the previous posts - there is a regualtion just come itot force about unentered dogs being allowed into shows, but this is up to the individaul show committees, I believe, so wont be in effect for a while, and it is not alright to take unentered dogs into open shows (although some do)  especially indoor shows, and single breed shows, as it can get the show into trouble if the field officer appears, so can be quite well policed!  Of course, if you do have a quality pug bitch, then her unfortunate eye accident should not impinge on her being bred from, and you need a good route into "pugdom" so you can get knowledgeable, impartial advice about the virtues and faults of your girl.  Once you have had some assesments of her, you can then work out if it is worth going ahead with your breeding plans, or you need to start afresh, just keeping your first girls as a pet.  IF you would like to let me know whereabouts in the UK you are, and your girls parentage, I will try and give you some contacts who can help in your arrear.
bye
Gwen
