Topic Dog Boards / General / when in season?
- By TAPS [gb] Date 26.09.05 12:22 UTC
Does any one know roughly when a girl pup will have her first season and how often will it happen?  My pup is a 21 weeks old, springer.

The average age for a first season is roughly 6 months - though any time from 5 months to one year is within the 'normal' range. Others can be several months later, but that's unusual. As for frequency - again, on average, every 6 months (for 21+ days at a time), but I've noticed that the frequency tends to be the same as the age of the first one. If the first season was at 8 months, they tend to be at 8-monthly intervals. Every bitch is different, though, and none of them have read the books!

Do you have a copy of "The Book of the Bitch", by JM Evans and Kay White? If not, I'd certainly recommend you get one - it's very helpful.

My medium sized breed in my own expereince have come into season from 6 to 10 months of age, but 8 months seems to be most common.

As for intervals between I have had from 16 to 36 weeks or 4 to 8 months, though most of mine are more or less 6 monthly plus a week or two.

A friend who has WELSH springers told me that in that breed they are often over a year at first season and tend to be about 10 months apart.

Bitches often cycle the same way as other female relatives (mothers and Aunts/sisters) so contacting your breeder should give you a more accurate idea.

Your breeder should really be your first port of call for problems or queries, all but veterinary emergencies:D  They will also be more aware than your vet may be of any health problems or tendencies within the breed.

As a breeder I consider it my responsibility to be available to offer an after sales service and ongoing interest in my pups throughout their life, and most breeders welcome regular updates, even though we have to accept that not all new owners will wnat to have us as extended family :D

Hi TAPS, I think this very much depends on the breed.  In the large breed I have, a first season could be as late as 18 months.  The earliest would be 6 months.  The average is probably 10-12 months.  The Book of the Bitch is a good book.
