- By Loganberry [gb] Date 24.09.05 16:42 UTC
I have a limited show to go to tomorrow this will be my first show , i was wondering could i wear jeans if i wear a smart top with them ?
- By bowers Date 24.09.05 16:46 UTC
We had a group winner/placer at crufts years back wearing jeans   :)  the judges are meant to be judging  the dogs so in theory you could be naked :o
- By Loganberry [gb] Date 24.09.05 16:48 UTC
i think i'll pass on the naked bit, every body would leave in horror at the sight of me naked lol :o
- By Lea Date 24.09.05 16:55 UTC
if thats the case your dog would win best in show ;) LMAO

Personally I always insist my husband wears a shirt and trousers and always looks like he is planning on going the whole way.  We always have carried a jacket in the car right from day one.  Although the judge is judging the dog you are supposed to compliment it.  In my very humble opinion people in jeans look like they are not expecting to win.
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 24.09.05 17:48 UTC
I wear 'jeans' (coloured type not the denim) and normally wear a smart
jacket which is normally the same colour as the 'jeans'.

For limit shows I wear jeans!  And since being out of handling have started to for open shows now and again but wear a nice shirt or jacket! :)

Dress the full suit if I'm going into handling classes or at champshows! :)

For a limit I would say jeans are ok, just as long as they are smart..I wouldn't wear jeans as all of mine are slightly 'worn' :D

I used to wear a pair of smart cords and a jacket for open shows but now I tend to wear suit trousers and a smart top and the same for champ shows, I think at those you should always dress as if you will get to group, even if you haven't got a chance, at least you've made an effort! I like to look smart, it sets the dog off better and gives you more confidence, IMO.

For Crufts I am going ultra smart as its my first showing a dog and I really want to make an effort, plus it was freezing this year so I needed something new..and warm ;)

I always wear Jeans, but I do wear a jacket.  To be honest I prefer the support of denim over suit trousers :D
- By LucyD [gb] Date 25.09.05 06:37 UTC
I wear shirt and trousers for open shows and a suit (if I remember the jacket!) for champ shows. My friend advised this as she says nobody looking scruffy ever gets BOB or the Group or BIS! :-)

"My friend advised this as she says nobody looking scruffy ever gets BOB or the Group or BIS!"

This is awful, they are dog shows why do the dogs miss out just because the owner has taken more time over the dog than themselves....surely thats the whole point?  Oh I dunno lol, never shown and never will cos I'm far to scruffy anyway :D
- By ice_queen Date 25.09.05 08:15 UTC
Zoe, Those who dress smart just finish the picture of dog and handler.  So much time is spent preparing a majority of breeds why not take some time over yourself?  It doesn't take much to put on a pair of trousers and a shirt does it?  Or brush your own hair and if long tie it back?

When I'm dressed in my suit then the dogs know it's serious work and they show well.  If I'm scruffy it means were out for a day of fun! :D

Also it has been proven (somewhere, somehow, don't see how but.....) that the clothes you wear effects the way you act.  Thats why at work in an office they woudl rather you in a suit then jeans a baggy t-shirt! (although this is relaxing these days)

It is all mainly about the overall appearance of the final picture giving to the judge! You want to give the impression of saying "look my dogs the best" and to do this the picture needs to be the best!

Oh and trust me I don't take longer then the dogs ;)  I will spend hours bathing, drying, trimming etc the dogs.  Myself?  Quick shower in morning (dogs used all hot water eveing before!) straighten fridge (short hair) (might cheat using dog products to help it go straight!) Throw on jeans and shirt with trousers and jacket in suit carrier in car!  Go to show, get changed at show...toilets not always suitable....Nope dogs have more time spent on them and thats on just setters....I don't want to count the hours poodle people sepend on their dogs!!!!! ;)
- By Zoe [gb] Date 25.09.05 09:40 UTC
Oh of course, I can understand people wanting to look good, I can also understand that your dogs know that its show time when your dressed nice... I suppose I just dont think it's right that some dogs wont win because their owners arnt dressed right :)

For example,I don't think it would make a haporth of difference whether Mike Gadsby wore jeans. If the dogs are the best, they are the best and they will win. However, Mike Gadsby would never dream of wearing jeans to a show.

I believe the trends in dress for shows varies from breed to breed, what is OK in one breed would be unusual in another. I personally would never wear jeans to a Championship show, but I would for a Limited show, and for Crufts, many months of thought and planning go into what I wear.

When out walking the dogs though, it's a pair of holey jeans a smelly old waxed jacket, muddy hunter wellies and a suede swagman hat. Conjers up quite a picture dunnit. (Tramp).  :)

Good point! :-D For us ordinary mortals however.....!

It may wel be a breed thing, but I thought that Barbara Stokes looked great with ehr Elkhound Crufts Group winner in just grey moleskin trousers and a pink jumper/tlong sleeved top.  She is pictured on the back of the sleeve of the KC movement and conformation video tape.
- By husky [ca] Date 25.09.05 13:04 UTC
Why do you need to straighten your fridge before a dog show Rox??!!LOL

I never wear jeans for any show. I think to a lot of judges, especially allrounders, it helps to give a more 'professional' image. Sometimes they may think that someone in jeans has just brought along their 'pet' for the day, and isn't a serious show person, and so is unlikely to have a good dog. Wrong I know, but true!
- By ice_queen Date 25.09.05 15:44 UTC
Husky, I have short hair (spiked at back) and my fridge is REALLY curley and it looks horrible and I have always styled it straight! :)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.09.05 10:35 UTC
Well I don't do scruffy jeans, but I have had RBIS/RBPIS at Open shows, and placed in the Group/Puppy Group at Championship shows as well as wining overall heats of the Champion stakes and Puppy stakes, as well as daily heats.
- By rach1 Date 25.09.05 15:57 UTC
Er Ice Queen, I think you mean fringe not fridge!!!!  Unless of course straightening your fridge before shows is a weird custom you have developed to bring you luck!!!!!!!!!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 25.09.05 16:52 UTC
The freezer had better watch out as well! ;) :D
- By ice_queen Date 25.09.05 17:06 UTC
Oh pooey!!!!  As you can tell I never was good at spelling or checking my work!!!! ;)
- By LucyD [gb] Date 27.09.05 17:25 UTC
Come on Luvapug, I'm dying to know how you got on at your first show!!! :-)
- By Loganberry [gb] Date 27.09.05 19:52 UTC
well unfortunately she didnt get any where although she was very good stood beautifully, was so still on the table for the judge and walked so nicely, but still got no where, never mind she did her best and i got a lot of very nice comments about her, so we will keep trying she's still only just 6 months,
- By ice_queen Date 27.09.05 20:10 UTC
Ahhh there's always next time...put it down to a stupid judge ;) :D

As long as she behaved herself and did everything you could wish for then ywhat more do you want?  (yes OK a judge who likes your girl! :P )
- By LucyD [gb] Date 27.09.05 20:31 UTC
Never mind, like Icequeen says, there's always next time, when the judge will clearly see that your dog is the best there by miles! :-D

I'm pleased she behaved so well - a real credit to your training no doubt!
