Pronounce "Sloughi" ?
- By Phoebe [gb] Date 23.09.05 23:23 UTC
Sloogi... at least that what I was told when I asked as Sloughi breeder at Crufts once.

But then again, I own shar-pei and pronounce it shar-pay and really the correct pronunciation is sar-pay.

Thanks! I'd never have thought of Sloogi, but I take it that someone who owns them knows how to say it. I'd always thought of them as Slough-ies (Like someone who comes from Slough) :D

I wonder if the breed was once related to the Saluki - the names sound very similar.

I think sloughis are North African and salukis are Arabian? I remember reading that they are not actually as closely related as you'd think looking at them. When they looked at some mitochondrial DNA samples, Salukis shared more common ancestry with Canaan dogs and Sloughis with Basenjis than they did with each other.

Both names are from the same Arabic root and originally not really of a specific breed, but is like when we say sighthound in England. I'm sure somebody who's more familiar with the breeds can put that right if it's wrong. When the sloughi exhibitor told me how it was pronounced, it was identical to how you pronounce Saluki but with a G instead of a K.
