I am very new to this forum and had a question.  I recently purchased an unaltered German Shorthair Pointer who is 5 years old.  She is very healthy.  My question is that when I bought her about 4 weeks ago she was thin.  Now her stomache has distended a lot.  She also has a VERY large appetite.  When I got her, her teats were hard now it has swollen and dropped.  Her stole is soft and she occasionally has gas.  I do not have any male dogs and are yard is fenced very high.  I suspect that if she is pregnant she would be by the 2 year male German Pointer that was housed with her from the previous owner.  Is it possible that she is only having a False Pregnancy.  The owner I purchased the dogs from has moved out of the country and I do not have a way of getting in contact with him.  If she is really pregnant how many weeks would she be. 

Your best bet is to let your vet check her out as it's impossible to tell without seeing her. A scan will tell you. Most bitches start piling on the weight after around 6 weeks so IF she is pregnant she could be due soon, so the sooner you get her checked out the better. Good luck!

The vets in my area do not have a ultrasound the closes one is about 2 half hour drive.  Most of the veterinarians I have called said I could get an X-ray or palpate to find out if she is pregnant.  Would these be good solution or is there any obvious signs I should look for to see if she is pregnant or not.  I have felt her stomache as suggested I can feel some bumps but no kicks.  I can also hear fluids moving in her stomache.  She does not have any discharge and her vulva is not much swollen as before when I first purchased her.  Thanks for the quick advice though.

She was last wormed 4 months ago.

I would still take ehr to the vet -he or she should be able to feel if she is advanced (a certain stages it is hard to feel) or x-ray will certainly work, at least then you will know for certain.  Here's a good site that tells you of signs of pregnancy:

Thanks for the site.  I think it more confirmed the fact that she is likely to be pregnant because she did vomit a couple of times when i first had her.  I just thought she wasn't used to the dog food I gave her.  I have an appointment to see the vet tomorrow but on the site it says its safe to X-ray the pups only in the 8th week is this true?  Any other sites I should be aware of?

My first thought was worms too. A large worm infestation can cause similar symptoms to these. We worm every three months, so she is overdue for worming anyway.

Well as it turns out my dog is pregnant the vet did an X-ray and listened to the mother dogs stomache.  He said she is probably 6 weeks pregnant.  I will let you guys all now what is going on.  I got her wormed as well.  I also have a question regarding information I recieved from another site.  It said to keep your dog isolated from other dogs so she can't get herpes but is it okay to have her wither my other dog? They get along fine though.

Oh dear what a shame. Do you have her KC papers? You won't be able to register the pups anyway without the stud dog owners signiature, always supposing it WAS his other dog that was the father.

from the sound of the poster i would guess she is not in UK...maybe USA?  maybe registration is different there if no papers, I dont know.

yes it is very sad that I do not have papers for registration.  I am from the USA.  I have been taking her temperature and her vulva has enlarged and her temperature has been 99 for the past two days now.  Since I do not know her exact breeding date how close is she to be due.  She has had temperature yesterday at 100.2 am 100.8 pm, 99.2 am, 99.8 pm, 99.4 am and 99 pm.  I have heard that this method is not reliable but I need information as she is just lying in her whelping box now and going outside once in a while.  her vulva seems to have almost grown overnight is this normal?
