my bitch (daisy EBT) has just sucessfuly raised a litter of six. During this time she has been recluctant to go for her usual walks with her mother, as a result of this her feet have gone very dry and hard, and now the pups have gone she wants to go walkies again, they have now started cracking. I have a vet appt. for friday. is there anything i should be doing in the meantime, to help her. any advice? have registered but cant log in and ask question
Hi Guest, unless the pads of the feet are bleeding, there is no need to do anything at all. The rough skin will simply wear away with correct exercise. Well exercised dogs have soft smooth pads. Dogs that don't get out have hard rough pads and long nails.

There is a condition called Hyperkeratosis where the pads of the feet become thickened and dry and develop deep cracks which are very painful. You can help by putting creams on the feet (nappy rash cream is good and cheap) Hopefully tho its simply because she hasn't exercised. Your vet will be able to help.
I hope it isn't digital hyperkeratosis as dogs with the condition should not be bred from. It was a concern in Irish Terriers some years ago, but careful and responsible breeding means it is now rarely seen in the breed.
Hi, I found good old vaseline clear, in tin or tub, did the trick! Try and do this at the end of the day (bedtime). Then it gets to work in. Of course, it will be a bit sticky but a good massage and most will have gone. You could give it a go! JP
