Hey
After doing much research we have decided that we would love to be the proud owners of our very own skye terrier. We spoke to the breed secretary and contacted the breeders listed on this site, no puppies have been registered yet this year though a few said they were planning litters for autumn.
One breeder said that her bitch was 4/5 weeks pregnant and that she would be able to be more definite in 1/2 weeks and also asked if we intended to show our dog? We replied saying that we currently had no intentions of showing, we really want a dog to be a much loved family pet, of course we will train and socialise him. Is it "taboo" to say we are not intending to show the dog?
As now 3 weeks have passed, I have not heard from the breeder again and emailed again but still no reply. I don't want to appear like i'm harassing the breeder, particularly given that something bad could have happened. Should I call?
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks
Sarah
We never had any problems when we said we weren't planning on showing our pup :D I have heard a breeder's say "it would be nice for them all to go to show homes, but the main thing is is that no matter where they go, they are loved and cared for firstly as family pet's, anything after that is a bonus" I think that is the best way any breeder could look at it :D
If I were you, I'd contact the breed club again, and see if the breeder has left details of the pups there, if she has then just give her a ring, if she hasn't then maybe you would need to leave it at that.

Thanks for your advice Nat
Spoke to the breed club and she hasn't left any details yet but there is a Skye show this weekend, so she might inform them then. Will just have to carry on waiting... There are so few Skye litters a year but I know the pup will be worth the wait.

I know what it is to wait, we have been waiting since February!!! Others have waited much longer than that though!!
Good luck with it :D
I think when breeders ask if puppy is to be shown, they are trying to find out how many of the prospective buyers are actually wanting show quality puppies, as not all pups in the litter will be of a standard to succeed in the show ring. I was asked when i got mine, and although he's from show home and lines, i wanted him to work. The breeder was fine about it and helped me choose the pup most suitable for pulling.
After all .. all pups in a litter are different, some will be good for show, some working and some will be suited to a quiet (ish lol) family life. The breeder will know the pups so will have a better idea as to which is suited to each persons lifestyle.
That just my thoughts :D

I agree that all the puppys in the litter will be different, it was just because we didn't hear from her after that I thought perhaps I had said the wrong thing. Thanks for your advice.

Maybe they lost your contact details. You could contact them again with a message something like, "maybe you ahve lost my details but I enquired about having a pet pup from your hoped for litter, is there any news?"
