I mated my bitch on her last season, but unfortunatly she missed.
We did all of the premates and on day 14 she was still only on 2.39 progesterone, and she would have to get to 5.
To cut a long story short she was mated twice and missed.
i visited my vet this week, as my bitch will soon be ready to be mated again, but he has surprised me by saying that i should not bother with the premates and that i should just get the injection done that will make the bitch ovulate, he then said she definatly would not miss again, but i find this very hard to believe as if it was that easy then most people would have it done. There must be some draw back to this njection.
please let me know if you know anything about this.
I dont know what breed you have but day 14 is very late in my humble opinion. Whenever we have mated the girls or had other girls come to Thomas we have always opted for day 12. None have ever missed. I have never heard of the injections?

In my breed day 15 to 18 for mating is far more usual than the traditonal day 12. I have never had a bitch ready that early.
the bitch that had a litter most recently has consistently ovulate at day 12 so fertile day 14 to 16, and been mated on day 16 fiorst litter and days 15 and 16 for second larger litter, wouldn't stand any earlier.

I used the injection to bring on my girl's ovulation when she'd missed to the chosen stud twice. All the blood tests were fine, and she was mated three times over 5 days. She still missed, even though the stud had been semen tested and proved fertile, and indeed had sired a couple of other litters at around the same time.
Next season we mated her to a full brother of the previous stud, without bothering about blood tests, and got a litter. Sometimes a particular match just won't work.
Hi thomas the spot, my breed is ddb and it is not unusuall for these dogs to be ready at 20 days plus.
thats not really what i am worried about, what i meant was that surely this injection can't be that great or everybody would use it.
So different breeds can vary quite a bit? Unfortunately when my family used to breed I was too young to remember and as they are now all dead their knowledge has died with them. All I know is breeding dallies. Still interesting abut the injection though.
My bitch was mated day 20 and missed, next season she took from either day 15 or 17. So i think there is quite a wide variation and I think from talking to people (in my breed anyway) that bitches are getting later, used to be days 10 & 12 now it's more 14 & 16 and even later.
mated my bitch on day 18 and she had a litter of 8
I had a bitch once ovulate on day five.
I had a premate test done on my one bitch as my dog was going wild here.
She had not ovulated, they said it would be several days before she would of
ovulated. But I took her to stud two days later, hoping that I was not going
to miss her. She had 10 puppies. So I guess we got the right day. I know thats
not a lot of help. Its very hit and miss breeding, as one bitch I knew ovulated
day 5 and had gone over the following day, would not stand for a dog only one
day in her season, so getting that day was hard.
Can you leave your bitch at the stud, or would that be too traumatic for her. Or could
you get the stud owner to put you up for a few days. I know in my breed thats been
offered to me. Then you can cover your bitch several days.
