Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / When to reduce to 2 meals

Our 16 week old Labrador puppy is packing on the pounds like youwouldn't believe.  She's from a 'stocky' background anyway so we are expecting her to be a big girl - aroung 40kg fully grown according to our vet.  I think she must be about 17kg already (taking her to sit on the vets scales next week!).  She is having 3 meals a day - I've no idea when to reduce to 2 meals, any advice would be appreicated.
Cheers
Nicky

Hi nicky
usually around 6 mths old ... sooner if you find they are not eating the midday meal. thats what i was told for my large breed. :) i would think its the same as she will still have some growing to do.

Your breeder should have given you a diet sheet to indicate the reduction of meals as well of how much to give at each meal.  However all dogs are different. My boy went down to 2 meals when he was six months because he gave up on the lunch meal and wouldn't eat it. So I split the lunch meal between the breakfast and tea.
If your pup is eating all three meals then continue giving them to him as three smaller meals are better than two larger ones at his age.
Generally you would be looking at cutting him down between 6-9 months down to three meals. Then you stay on that or cut down to one meal at around 12 months. I personally feed one meal in the evening but alot of people continue to feed breakfast and tea throughout the life of the dog.
In terms of her weight I wouldn't know of what should be their correct weight but 40kg seems alot to me. My friends rottis weigh that. Hopefully some lab people will reply to your post.

You feed hills, right? The mammoth amount of grains would no doubt be causing the kilo's to pile on :( You may find if you switch to a better food you wont have such a problem with your dogs weight :)

I thought everyone went on about how 'grains' were indigestible for dogs? If they're indigestible, they won't pile on the weight! ;)

Hi Nicky

We are talking about a Lab here. I suspect that she will contunue to eat 3 meals a day until she is 12 givent he chance!

Normaly around 6 months would be about right, unless she is starting to get too fat, in which case the vet will advise.
