an overweight labrador who has gained her weight & wooly coat since being spayed a few years ago

and

a cocker spaniel puppy

They are on James WB at the moment ... she's on the adult light one and he's on the puppy version.  You seem to get more grams per kg of dog than many other makes though, which is good for the lab as it fills her up more, but not so good for my purse as it makes it cost a lot more.  Thx.

Just reduce the JWB and add bulk like veggies and rice to fill their tummies and increase their excercise. This should be the right way to loose some tubbiness :)

I had a adopted Lab who was a very big telly tubby and managed to shift kilos off her by doing this :)

I'm only giving my Cav 2/3 or less than the recommended amount of JWB, I think these manufacturer all overstate the amounts to sell more!

I wouldnt add rice to an overweight dogs food,it's good for underweight dogs tho :)

Topsy are your dogs getting plenty of excercise?

I dont think it's fair to reduce a dogs food to almost nothing, when a good amount of excercise would help the problem immensly without the need to hold out food. My neighbour is trying to get weight of her dog,but she will not excercise him,the dog is on the tiniest amount of food and is most unhappy, when all she needs to do is take the poor dog for walks!

Sorry for ranting this is a bit of a sore subject with me :(

I added beans to Taz's food when I wanted him to lose some weight and it worked great.... I use to have him on senior food, weight control food and since then I just switched him back to normal food as what my bostons eat, I did not care for the ingredients in those other ones.... He will be 12 in october and his weight is a lil up there but thats kinda do to lack of exercise because of hd and arthritis I can only get him to walk a block now, he has slowed down alot :(

I tend to estimate the amount of JWB I give my CKCS based on how much she ate the previous day.  I have to say that a few weeks ago I did actually weigh it out according to the portions stated on the bag - I was amazed, I felt I must have been starving her when I saw how much she should be having, but there is no way she would eat as much as the bag said.  I carried on feeding her with her usual amounts and it lasted 2 days!  I think they must tell you too much to get you to buy more food.

I have a friend at work who has 2 cockers and she doesn't feed them as much as it says on the bag, she says its way too much.

No wonder all these poor little Cavs go around so fat they can barely waddle. I wish something could be done to stop the manufacturers vastly overstating the amount of food to give a dog! Or at least putting in large letters that you should weigh your dog regularly and check his weight against the breed standard!! :-)

I think I read that makers put the maximum amount that a very active working dog needs as if they put less and some twit only feeds what they say while the dog fades away they (the makers) could be sued, specially if welfare get involved in the case - newspaper headlines - court case, dog rescued from starvation etc. I take it I'm not the only one who thinks 'nice dog - shame about the owner' I'm involved with pet training classes and we don't half get some right ones turn up.

^ Yep - they're the kind of people who if they had a nut allergy, would eat a bag of peanuts and then sue KP because it didn't say 'WARNING, CONTAINS NUTS' on the package.

If I fed either of my dogs the manufacturers recommended amount of food, they'd be like blimps with legs. I don't think I feed much more than 50% of the recommended amount (shar-pei and TM's are very food efficient).

Even the minimum given on the bag is way too much for Poppy.  We weigh Poppy once a fortnight, and as she isn't underweight, overweight, skinny and we can still feel her ribs when we stroke her, we'll carry on feeding as we do.
