Thomas spilt some milk on the carpet a few days ago, I was in the bath and OH 'cleared' it up - obviously not well enough because it really smells now!!! I have tried washing the carpet 3 times, it is right in the corner of the room, so I can get the carpet up and clean the back of it and the underlay, but the smell is still lingering, other than changing the carpets (which we are doing after the dog is fully trained) has anyone got any ideas on how to get rid of it please?

:D

Firstly you will need a bottle of red wine, a bottle of white wine and a smallish rug.

Pour yourself a glass of red wine then drink it. Pour yourself another glass of red wine. Whilst you are sipping that open the bottle of white wine. Drink the rest of the second glass then whilst pouring the third glass of red wine accidently pour some of it over it over the milk spill making sure you have enough for a final glass ;)

Meanwhile pour the white wine over the red wine spill. Finish the red wine and then pour yourself a glass of white wine. Drink that then start to think about cutting the carpet up where the milk, red and white wine stain is as it will look and smell horrible  . As you are not convinced yet it is a good idea pour yourself another glass and by the time you finish that you will have convinced yourself it is a very good idea :D :D

Cut the carpet and and place the rug you had prepared earlier over the hole then job done ! :D

If you are not convinced by my idea then try a good carpet deodoriser or bicarb of soda is supposed to be good ! ;)

LOLOLOL :D I will try the red and white wine thing first then :D LOL

I have used bicarb on it, I don't know what else to do, but it really smells!!! Looks like we will have to hire a carpet cleaner again, I knew we should have just bought one instead of hiring one last time!!

Why can't blokes do a job right the first time? He has come up with every excuse in the book, I have told him it isn't the first time milk has been spilt but when I clean it up it doesn't smell.

...Sorry getting off my high horse now!! :D

Listen I swear this is true :-)

When I was young IE under 10. My parents were out somewhere. I went in my mothers room ( which was a no no)

Well to cut a long story short , I got a hold of her 1970s choc brown foundation and spilt it on my cream carpet in my room. Could get the makeup off it so cut a square out the carpet.  :-)

I can remember what she did to me as a punishment so it couldn't have been too bad but when I look back especially having  a daughter myself I laugh so much. :-)

Actually just thought, where it is spilt, is right where the dogs crate is going to go when he is here, so if I cut the carpet to the same shape as the crate, then no one will be any the wiser, as before we get rid of the crate - if we do - the carpets will be changed anyway!!

I think I shall wait for all of the wine to wear off though before I reach for the stanley knife, I do quite like having 10 fingers ;) :)

Natalie,

cut it out to shape of cage like you say.  put Lino in place so if puppy as any accidents in cage it goes onto lino... :D  there nice soloution!

The crate has got a base in it, so nothing will come through, and he will have a lining of vet bed to keep him comfy, so hopefully nothing will come through anyway. Besides, I am sure it will happen, but I am planning on being very carefull and not giving him the chance to go to the toilet in his cage - well thats the plan!!! :D

Thanks Denese, I knew there was a household item that I hadn't used

I am actually wondering if the smell is still there or if it just up my nose!!

If you're going to try a carpet cleaner, I recommend the 'Rug Doctor'.  You can hire it from Focus and Smiths (I think) cleaners.  Ever so easy to use - not that I used it of course, left that to the OH! :D

To get rid of the smell of gone off milk from 'up your nose' poor yourself another glass of red wine and whilst drinking it in one gulp think of something funny - whilst swallowing and laughing at the same time you will inevitably (sp) 'snort' some out of your nose, you now cannot smell the milk but a lovely bouquet of red wine - far nicer :)

My friend spilt milk in her car (carton leaked or something).  Smell was so bad the kids were gagging each time they got in.  Someone told her to use vinegar and that completely cleared it.

I have tried bicarb, some proper Dyson cleaning stuff, and just soapy water, I even cut a lemon up and squeezed the juice out of another one to see if it would absorb the smell, but none of it worked. I will try the vinegar, and if that doesn't work I think it will be time to get hubbie to do some carpet cutting!!!

It really does smell bad :(

Good excuse for a new carpet, should you be wanting one!!!
- By Natalie1212 Date 21.09.05 13:43 UTC
Well we are waiting for the dog to be trained, and then we are changing them all. Although I am hoping that there will be very few - if any - accidents in side, I want to know how much of a chewer he will be and so on before we change them all!

What about febreze? That gets odours out doesn't it? :)
- By Natalie1212 Date 22.09.05 06:58 UTC
I didn't think Fabreeze was the best thing to use around animals? Besides I can't stand the smell of it anyway!!

I got everything ready to do the white vinegar, got a nice bowl of hot soapy water, got my rubber gloves at the ready, a couple of sponges and a roll of kitchen roll, and then realised we didn't have any vinegar!!! So we are off to Tesco tonight to get some! :)
